Quentin the Quahog predicts longer winter. ***
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nantucket- Quentin the Quahog, Nantucket's
answer to Punxsutawney Phil, squirted to the left
just after noon today ( Feb 2 ) joining his groundhog
pal in predicting six more weeks of winter.
As punishment for his prediction, Harbor Master
Dave Fronzuto ate Quentin raw.
As per tradition, he would have done the same even
if the mollusk had been the harbinger of good news.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*** ( for those not familiar with Cape & Islands traditions and lore )
Quahog is the Native American name for a CLAM.
The rules for prediction state that if Quentin squirts water
( as quahogs are wont to do ) to the right, it will mean winter
will be over in four weeks. If to the left, six more weeks of winter.
Ole Phil has nothing on us!

And to think I used to dig those things for a "living" when I was very, very young.viking33 wrote:Quahog is the Native American name for a CLAM...
(Please note my fantasy football name in the league I play in every year. Fourteen weeks of regular season and two weeks of playoff. I lost in the playoffs! )

How well I remember the quahog bakes at Pt. Judith R.I. I never knew about this folklore and it brought a chuckle to my face (whether we like it or not, Spring will always come 6 weeks later whether he squirts right or left--sucking quahogs has to be better than oysters!~viking33 wrote:Quentin the Quahog predicts longer winter. ***

And that's pronounced CO-Hog. ( like co-host ) It's funny to hear some tourist, trying to sound like a Cape Codder, say "I'll have a mess of QUAW-Hogs."Hey Jude wrote:How well I remember the quahog bakes at Pt. Judith R.I. Re: Breaking news from Cape Cod & the Islands
oh yes indeed!~ I lived in North Kingstown RI for 3 years and during that time came to appreciate Narragansett Bay quahogs. We dug them and then baked them in the fire pits in the sand. I haven't thot about them for decades so memory tripping again!~ http://www.quahog.com/quahog.html Here's some info on the RI variety.

It's funny that the name never did come across Long Island Sound. I never heard anything but clams and I lived right on Northport Harbor.

Not all clams are quahogs, Al. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QuahogBigaldoc wrote:It's funny that the name never did come across Long Island Sound. I never heard anything but clams and I lived right on Northport Harbor.
I grew up with Pismo clams, which are completely different.

We have geoducks here in the North West http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/sea/puge ... oduck.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Some people even try to get a hunting license to hunt them.
Of course we had on the state law books for many years, of a limit of 5 per day could be shot.

A quahog by any other name is still a quahog.
