IE8 - Security Warning

Post by Graeme »

Hello

I'm occasionally getting the following Security Warning whilst opening a web page:

Is this anything to worry about? I don't seem to be missing out if I click yes and nothing terrible seems to happen if I click no!

Regards

Graeme

This is a very common issue.

You have connected to a secure web page with a URL starts https:// This means that there will be an encrypted connection between you and the web site, and that your browser has validated that the remote site really is the site it claims to be, using SSL and a certificate issued by a trusted authority.

The error message arises because some content on the site is not secure, this is often a logo or other graphic that they have carelessly included without the same level of security as other page content. If you are likely to be entering any confidential information, such as your credit card details, then it is best to answer Yes to this dialog box, this will ensure that you only see the trusted parts of the web page.

Reason: Edited by StuartR to show that Yes is the correct response to the dialog box if you want only secure content - thanks to Jefferson Scher for pointing this out to me

That's generally not a problem. If a web address begins with https:// instead of http://" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, data traffic between the server and your PC is encrypted. But a https:// web page may contain parts that come from http:// pages. That content is not encrypted. Internet Explorer warns you if a page contains such mixed content.

If you want to suppress this warning:
Select Tools | Internet Options.
Activate the Security tab.
Click the "Custom Level" button.
Scroll down to the "Miscellaneous" section.
Set "Display mixed content" to Enable.
Click OK.
Regards,
Hans

Thank you Gentlemen.

The site address does start with https:/ and the content which is not delivered appears to be all the jpgs. I'll just stick with clicking no on this site for now and see where else the issue arises. The site is a blog and the writer probably has no expertise in the field of Internet Explorer security. Perhaps I'll post a comment.

And not just 'bloggers' - I routinely get this message when logging into Barclays (UK) for internet banking!! Just to be cautious I always refuse to accept the mixed content (ie, I select 'YES') - it doesn't deny me anything I actually need to be able to see to conduct my banking options!
