I use Word 2010 and found it impossible to be able to remove a couple of horizontal lines that 'magically appeared' on a page.
After searching extensively on line I came across this:

'Borders' was my problem but in my case it was necessary to select multiple paragraphs in the page/No Borders as described within the link . I guess that I had somehow engaged Word *Auto Format' by typing three or more hyphens sometime ago when I first created the doc. However this link 'Troublesome Lines' describes how to delete many types of unwanted lines and may be of some assistance to other members.

Re: Removing stubborn lines
If you do't know about the border issue, its a very annoying scenario. In hindsight, if one gets a stubborn line in a document, the first place you go is borders. In other words, you only need to learn about this once.
