=COUNTA(A:A) is neat and simple and returns the number of non-blank cells in column A. Is there something less ugly than:
=COUNTA(A1:XFD1) to get the equivalent number of non-blanks cells in row 1?

Re: non-blank cells in a row
How about:
=COUNTA(1:1)
=COUNTA(1:1)
