... This one (Terry Stickels “Sticklers”) appeared Monday, July 06, 2015 in the Toronto Star:-
“Three of the seas below share a common characteristic that the others do not. Which is the odd sea out, and why?”.
Aral Sea, Black Sea, Caspian Sea, Dead Sea
The answer given “The Black sea is the odd one out; the others are, or were, lakes”.
True.
But then I think that avoiding specific characteristics (“The Aral” is the only one wholly contained within Russia”, “The Dead” is the only one that does not have a border with Russia” etc), there are many valid answers to the puzzle that use only generic geographical characteristics.
For example:
Dead– smallest long dimension
Caspian – longest long dimension
Aral – most northerly northen border
Black – most westerly western border
Dead – most southerly southern border
How many unique generic geographical characteristics can you find for any one of the seas?
I gave you two for the Dead Sea; how many more can you find for the Dead Sea?
And they have to be generic measures, not related to specific man-made effects such as national boundaries.

The Black Sea is the odd one out as the others do not have a colour in the name
BTW: My puzzles (or at least 90% of them ebb towards this puzzle as they have many seemingly correct answers )

OK. I give in.Leif wrote:On a similar theme, which two seas do not have a shore?
I am assuming that by "shore" you mean "the boundary between the water of the body and the earth", in which case it seems to me that all seas must, by definition, have a shore.

(grudgingly) "Well, OK".Leif wrote:OK, the first is ...
But shorely even (that) sea has a boundary, otherwise how could it be identified.
