My first image -2
Same package, different problem, same level of user!
Macrium Reflect doesn't see my hard drive, C: Last night I installed the 30-day trial, standard edition by mistake; couldn't see the C.
Then I re-read the thread My first image and so un-installed Macrium Standard and installed Macrium Free, with the results you see above.
I restored from the recovery partition yesterday (for the first time) and plan to do that again next weekend, so I'd love to get this working before then.
I checked permissions by right-clicking on C: and ever man and his dog has full access to drive C:.
Drive I: is a 500GB external drive, and my screenshot shows that Macrium can see C:.
TIA for any tips, nudges etc.

I think the problem is related to my system rather than Macrium Reflect.ChrisGreaves wrote:Same package, different problem, same level of user!
I installed a copy of Acronis, and that package too fails to allow me to select partitions.

Just a shot in the dark here but I wonder if it is because your C: drive is shown as being a Dynamic drive as opposed to being set as Basic? Just wondering...ChrisGreaves wrote:I think the problem is related to my system rather than Macrium Reflect.ChrisGreaves wrote:Same package, different problem, same level of user!

Chris,
I'm not sure I understand your screenshot ( at least so far as the Acronis shot is concerned )
Are the choices greyed out? The C drive shows it's there.
What version are you trying?
I have TI 2012 and it has a choice to select Multiple Partitions in it. Look at the first screen in TI and check for the tutorial page.

Further research shows that Dynamic disk support is available with ATI, but only with the Plus Pack installed.ChrisGreaves wrote:I think the problem is related to my system rather than Macrium Reflect.ChrisGreaves wrote:Same package, different problem, same level of user!

In addition, Dynamic disk support in Macrium Reflect is available in the Professional version... not the free version.

I saw that too and pondered.... your C: drive is shown as being a Dynamic drive ...
I can't recall choosing that as an option - it's a new thing to me so I would have stalled and written it down at least, if I'd been asked about it during installation. (I'm a fan of pencil & paper)
I trotted off and did a bit of research, but I'm not much wiser:-
What are basic and dynamic disks?
Windows 7 - Convert a Dynamic Disk to a Basic Disk
Convert a Dynamic Disk to a Basic Disk with Windows 7 Disk Management
I have now "recovered" Win7 three times in 3 days, so i'm getting to be a dab hand at this.
I might try Macrium again on this new installation ...

Hi other-Bob(grin)
Acropnis: "ABS2010_trial_en-US.exe"
Yes, the choices are disabled. All the drives are present and functioning "normally" for all other applications that I had installed and tested.viking33 wrote:Are the choices greyed out? The C drive shows it's there.
Macrium: "v5.0.4076_reflect_setup_x64.exe" then "reflect_setup_free.exe" thenWhat version are you trying?

TI? My brain is fried after 2 15-hour days and another one looming up.I have TI 2012

TI = TrueImage (i.e. Acronis)
(or it could be a Texas Instruments calculator, of course)

The "suspense" is killing me! Did your machine come with dynamic as the default, OR, if you refresh it do you get such a choice? If not, are ya gonna go through the procedures to change the machine to "basic?"
Obviously, this is a new adventure for me too since I've no experience with dynamic disks. Can hardly wait for your next "chapter" in this one...

Re: My first image -2
You can easily convert those dynamic disks to basic disks by using the FREE Easeus Partition Manager. I used to use Acronis Disk Director but found it was never updated and got rather "clunky".
Easeus is a snap to use. From within the Easeus program, right click on one of the dynamic drives and it will have an option to convert it to basic type without any lose of data. Go down each of the drives shown as dynamic and click the "convert" button. Reboot and there you are, all basic drives.

Great find, Bob. I use Easeus but, having no experience with or need for dynamic disks, I didn't know it would do that conversion. Let's see what Chris says about it...viking33 wrote:You can easily convert those dynamic disks to basic disks by using the FREE Easeus Partition Manager....

Hi Bob. The 2012 Trial version does not support Dynamic disks.viking33 wrote:I have TI 2012 and it has a choice to select Multiple Partitions in it. Look at the first screen in TI and check for the tutorial page.
I see more comments in the thread above.(below as I type this).
I'm vastly puzzled by this.
Dynamic disks seem to be great things for 10% of regular correspondents of this Lounge, i.e. about 0.00001% of the general public, but of little use for the common herd, of which I am on the fringe, I know.
Maybe I just haven't grasped how great my life will be with dynamic disks [/bitter]
(Also feeling a bit overwhelmed by a 245 mega-byte download for a program that copies disks ...) [/bitter again]
I'm feeling very cautious at this point. I'm coming to the end of my third long day of this exercise, and wonder whether it wouldn't have been cheaper just to go buy a real shiny DVD, carved in stone, and repartition the Notebook drive, recovery, HP-stupid-ware and all, and get back to what I do best.
(I'm really getting too tired to function, and this text proves it!)

You don't have to wait, Bob. I'm having one of my trained goldfish unpack my old Radio-Shack MC10 microcomputer from 1984 ... Gotta be better than this Notebook/HP/Win7/HE/64-bit nonsense. Plus I could play music tapes on the offline storage device when I wasn't using it to load programs ... [/bitter]Bigaldoc wrote: Can hardly wait for your next "chapter" in this one...

OK, Bob, I trust you.viking33 wrote:Easeus is a snap to use.
I'll give it a spin, hopefully before my brain "snaps".
On one condition: You tell young Al he's not to read my report on what happened.
He's curious to know if Easeus will successfully convert my recovery partition, or whether I'll end up buying the shiny CD I could've bought last Friday night, thereby saving myself 3 days work ...

Installation fast.
I r/c the drive C and it starts to run, then claims that there is a partition error. I'm wondering now whether there is something intrinsically wrong with this hard drive.
I'll run a full drive scan/chkdsk/F equivalent, I think, then try again.

@Chris. Just thought that you would be excited to hear that I managed to create a rescue CD and a complete system backup (using Macrium Reflect) without any issues
Although.. I've no idea whether they will work if I should ever need them
Good luck with your dynamic escapade! Andy.

(later) so far so good.viking33 wrote:Easeus is a snap to use. ... convert it to basic type without any lose of data.
I ran the Easeus surface test (45 minutes) and found no errors.
I reran the dynamic-->basic process and the disk is now reported as Basic.
[acid test] reboot and see if Windows loads ....
(later still)
[/acid test]
So far so gooder. Win7 reboots.
Now to try an image backup.
I keep up at this rate I'll be fully operational again towards the end of November ...
