I use only the Index page - hardly ever go to the Portal.

I use the Portal as a convenient way to view everything I need. If there are many new posts, I'll click the View Unread Posts link.

Hmmm, I guess it depends on what you're interested in. Many here have heard me say in the past that I don't use Office so I'm not interested in reading any of that group of forums. There is no single "best" option - everyone can choose the option that suits the way they use Eileen's Lounge.
