(XP Pro, SP 3)
Evening –
I have suddenly not had sound on my system. The only change I made was to add a printer. On the way-off chance that was the cause, I unplugged the printer, still no sound.
Looking through Sound/Audio Devices Properties, volume is high, mute is unchecked. Under Hardware tab, all devices are working properly. Sound/Program Events, no sounds.
The diagnosis is???
Thank you,
Curious

Re: No Sound
As a start: have you checked all cables (that they are properly connected) and speakers and also tried with a restart of the computer?

Re: No Sound
There was another thread about loss of sound recently: Suddenly lost sound. The solution turned out to be:
Of course, it could be something different for you, but it's worth a try.- Activate the Audio tab of the Sounds and Audio Devices control panel.
- Make sure that your audio card is selected as Default device in the Sound playback section, and not a modem or some other device.
Best wishes,
Hans

Argus - Yes, that's the first thing I did.
Hans - Yes, the audio card (Intel - Integrated audo) is selected as default.
Thank you both,
Curious

Hi -
I did a System Restore, still no sound. Any other suggestions?
Thanks.

Re: No Sound
Does your computer have an earphone jack? If so, do you get sound on your earphone?
If not, one more thing to try: reboot your computer and press F2 to get into the BIOS setup before Windows starts.
Go to Advanced > Peripheral Configuration and check whether the onboard audio is enabled.

Re: No Sound
I am very, very red in my face - and embarrassed. I did not check diligently enough that the speakers were connected. Had I been more careful, Argus' advice to me would have saved you all your time.
Thank you all!

And think about how much pleasure you have given Argus, who is now preening and admiring himself in the mirror.

Maybe I would, Stuart, if I had got a notification about Curious' solved problem. But I didn't, so I don't. (The notifications are a bit random.)
Good to hear that Curious problem is solved.

Re: No Sound
I'm sure some poor soul will read this thread and check their connections, resolving their sound issue as well. And you can content yourself with the knowledge that others have paid for a call from the GeekSquad or other tech support service just to have them plug in their speakers.curious wrote:"And think about how much pleasure you have given Argus, who is now preening and admiring himself in the mirror." Thanks, Doc, for your gentlemanly words. Am still ashamed I didn't double check the connections. Occam's razor, yet again. (and again, and again, and again...............)
