If you add a bit of a squint to blur the image...it might pop out at you...

A question of greater interest is: Why can we "get" the image just as well by squinting our eyes? It seems to me that allowing LESS light to enter the eye should not make facial recognition any easier.
As an oldie, I prefer lots of light when reading books; my bedside lamp is an unshaded 100 watter!

Although squinting diminishes the amount of light, it also blurs the 'pixels', causing our brain to fill in the details that aren't really there. A biologist would probably say that there is an evolutionary advantage to being able to recognize a face even in low light conditions with little detail.
