What I really want to do is.
I want to get the name and IP address of computers on a network to be saved to a text.file
Is this possible ?

Re: List All PC on a Network
Open a command prompt window (Start button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt).
Type the command
net view
and press Enter to see a list of the names of connected computers. To save the result to a text file, use
net view > c:\lists\network.txt
specifiying the path and name of the text file that you want to create.
This doesn't list the IP addresses; I hope that someone else can help you with that.

Re: List All PC on a Network
If you use WakeMeOnLAN by Nir Sofer (download is near the very bottom of the webpage) you can get all sorts of network-y information for all the devices on your LAN (including your router, etc):
IP address, computer name, MAC address...
A very minor amount of configuration may be needed so that it just checks the IP addresses in your subnet, for example 192.168.2.1 to 192.168.2.254 for the "2" subnet.
Of course all the devices you want to list must be powered on and visible on the LAN at the time you run the program!

Re: List All PC on a Network
You will never get a complete and accurate list, because the concept of a "name" is ambiguous.
There can be multiple names for each computer, and which one you needs depends on what you are planning to use it for.

Hi
That makes sense.
but the IP Addresses should be unique?

The IP addresses will be unique (no two computers/devices will have the same IP address), but not necessarily static - a computer/device may have a different IP address tomorrow than it had today. This depends on the way the network is configured.

Re: List All PC on a Network
Some computers may have multiple IP addresses, even if they only have one network card, but this is not common.
Also each IP address can have multiple DNS names, and each computer can have a NETBIOS name which is different to the DNS name(s).

Hi
I see, So is there a means to know for sure which is a certain computer at any given time ( as long as they are on the network)?

In this post, Rudi suggested "Who's on my WiFi". I've been using it (the free version) since that time and it is a great tool for Wi-Fi networks.
