New forum for the future? ("History")
I'd like to be the second Lounger to propose a new forum "History", for The History of Computing.
As the industry grows, it grows old, and a HISTORY forum would provide a place for old farts like me to sound off without bothering the younger set (GRIN!).
Such a forum would also provide a resource for serious technical historians - I mean, of course, those historians who pursue the history of technology.
I worry that some of the great threads of history that have been developed over the years in Scuttlebutt could well be toast if Scuttlebut is pruned, and we don't (yet) have a toast/archive forum.
I said I'd like to be the second Lounger to propose a new forum "History" because I'm saddened to think that I might be the first.
For a sample thread please see http://www.eileenslounge.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=16248

So you're actually proposing a 'Toast' forum? That would go under 'Cooking', I think...

Alternatively, a Toast forum can be held in Claude's cellarHansV wrote:So you're actually proposing a 'Toast' forum? That would go under 'Cooking', I think...

I can help out with the wine. If somebody else brings bottles and glasses I'm prepared to contribute a corkscrew.

Sorry Chris, we don't think a wine-cellar (oops, sorry, history) forum is warranted or necessary at this time. We don't cull scuttlebutt posts, not even the test posts, although it may happen in the future, depending on disk space.
Cheers, Claude.

One question: If Scuttlebut does get culled in the future, there might be a chance for us to ask for threads to be considered to be moved?
I don't think it would be a huge task.
It has been said that many are culled, but few are chosen.

Re: New forum for the future? ("History")
The admins have no plans whatsoever to cull Scuttlebutt threads. Ten years ago or so in Woody's Lounge, we were running into hardware and software limitations of the system we were then using. One of the ways we used to alleviate those problems was to remove threads that were older than a couple of months from Scuttlebutt, and Claude even had to turn off the search function for a while.
Eileen's Lounge is running on more modern hardware and software, and we don't need to expire threads any more.
