With a spreadsheet that has a column that contains one of three text string values, what it the best way to count to determine how many of each there are?
It has been far too long since I used Excel daily on complicated tasks and I fear I've lost what few skills I ever learned.

You could create a pivot table that has the field in its Row Labels area and also in its Values area:

I remembered the COUNTIF function, vaguely. When I investigated, it did exactly what I needed.
