Nowadays even living outside the city there is enough ambient light in most places to cause pollution problems for sky observers. Combine the increased amount of particles in the air, their reflective qualities and an enormous number of lumens from unnecessary lighting, and you find that skies are pretty murky by comparison for 50 or 60 years ago.

Despite what many have been induced to believe, when it comes to night time lighting, less is more.
I'm absolutely in agreement with you, Bob, but I have a lot longer way to go than you do. I live outside Philadelphia, in the center of the D.C.-New York corridor, the biggest concentration of light pollution in the US.

It's a rare night, even in clear weather, that I can see more than a half dozen stars.

One of my fonder memories is a visit we made in 2000 to the Kitt Peak National Observatory for the nighttime demonstration.

Even in the Davis Mountains in the Big Bend area where it appears that there is no light in that map, the Davis Observatory has documented a diminution of air quality coming from the Mexican NAFTA factories which also emit more light than was the case before NAFTA. The combination of polluting air particles and additional reflective light has reduced the effectiveness of the research telescopes there.

If you look at an equivalent map of the UK and Europe, you will see that they have it even worse than you do, Jay.

Unfortunately, the test has failed. The glow-in-the-dark paint turned out to be vulnerable to moisture, so it's back to the lab for further development...
Best wishes,

Their Marketing Team must be asleep at the wheel.
Rebrand it is No-Glo-In-The-Damp and they'd make a fortune

If you invest in some night vision goggles, all roads will glow in the dark.

Actually, we have a night vision monoscope. Useful for when you start hearing lots of crunching around out in the leaves, late at night! One day, I'll be able to get some better night vision goggles. But they're goggling-ly expensive.
