I've read through Windows 7 goes to Sleep but cannot be put to Sleep, but my problem seems different.
Until I reinstalled Win7 from my CDs about a month ago, I had three options in Power Plan, HIBERNATE and SLEEP being two of them, and these were avilable in various guises, including "What to do when the lid is closed", "What to do when the power button is pressed" and, I think, the moral equivalent of "if nothing happens after so-many minutes".
Now I don't see SLEEP as an option. I can accept that I've done something "wrong", but can't work out what it is.
For the record, DELL Inspiron (laptop).
P.S. I have another problem with "Hardware Acceleration is disabled", and another with the keyboard showing capital-E-acute symbols when I tap the "?" key, so maybe I've really screwed up. I'm thinking that a resolution of the SLEEP problem might have a bearing on the other two problems.

P.S. In case anyone wonders about Changing Settings that are Currently Unavailable, here's what i see down that path:

Re: Windows can't SLEEP
Can you start a command window (with administrator privileges) and type
powercfg -a
This will show what sleep states are available on the system

Thanks Stuart for the fast reply.StuartR wrote:This will show what sleep states are available on the system
Below is an image of what I see. It seems to suggest that this might be related to a Display problem, but I thought of Sleep as a total-system function.

Did you use the DVD's from Dell or is it a retail copy?
If retail copy, then you need to get all of the drivers and software from Dell for this machine.

Chris,
A common cause of the symptoms you have is using the wrong display driver. If the driver doesn't support sleep then you don't get any sleep.

I'll do as you and Stuart suggest and see if I can update the drivers.

Re: Windows can't SLEEP
Hi Dave; in a quiet moment this afternoon I visited the DELL site http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/ca/ ... State=True" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and let it do some stuff automatically ("Can we inspect your current machine status?"), agreed to everything, and it did a little package.DaveA wrote:If retail copy, then you need to get all of the drivers and software from Dell for this machine.
That has fixed up my "hardware acceleration" problem on the display.
I am now going to turn that web site loose on my machine while I read a book!
Thanks for the nudge in the right direction!
