Firefox switches to a Word document
Hello -
Occasionally and automatically, Firefox (26) will switch to an open Word document...Anyone else experience this - and found a solution?
Thank you.

Re: Firefox switches to a Word document
I don't use Firefox, but I located the page below which describes Firefox opening documents automatically. If you review the link below, and reverse the instructions, maybe that will prevent FF from opening these docs automatically? Just a chanceuncle wrote:Hello -

Re: Firefox switches to a Word document
Are you performing any actions in FF when it automatically switches to a Word document?
IOW: Are you clicking a link or something that will cause it to switch to Word...

Re: Firefox switches to a Word document
I do use Firefox but I don't understand the problem you are describing. Please can you clarify, is it:
A) you are using Firefox and you've reached a web page and click on something on that page and a Word doc appears, if so is it a Word doc that belongs to you, i.e. a file from your own hard drive?
B) you are using Windows Explorer / My Computer and you have navigated to a Word doc that you want to open but when you double click on the file instead of Word opening and displaying the file, Firefox opens?
C) some other sequence of events, if so what are the steps that lead to the problem?
Thanks,
Ken

Much more detail is needed to try to analyze this problem.

Re: Firefox switches to a Word document
Re-reading the original post, which says:
I've lost count the number of times I've missed key Shift+S looking for a 'S' and got a save dialog box instead because I've hit Ctrl+S by mistake.
Ken
I wonder if it's not a FF problem but a simple key combination error. If the user's PC has Word running, with a document open AND Firefox running as well, as the foreground application; then the hot key combination Alt+Tab will make FF 'disappear' and the open Word doc will become the active application....Firefox (26) will switch to an open Word document

Does FireFox open the document or are you ending up in Microsoft Word ?uncle wrote:Occurrence of the switch: today was reading my Sent Gmail, just reading the list, no keys touched, when I am switched to an open Word document. Will 'document' more occurrences as they, em, occur....

Re: Firefox switches to a Word document
So, if you close Word, and open, say, an Excel document, does it move focus to Excel ?uncle wrote:the document was already opened in Word

Hi, Claude -
don't understand: I don't want to be in any Microsoft program - I want to be in/stay in Firefox.
Thanks

Re: Firefox switches to a Word document
Hi Uncle,
I think we are all going around in circles here as everyone is trying to figure out what is happening in your FF, while you are giving the bare minimum of information for us to work with.
Could I ask, for my sake (and the sake of all who are trying to help you) if you can re-phrase the issue in as much detail as possible.
- What are you doing in FF when this switch happens
- Are you clicking a link when it switches to Word
- etc... Pleas be as descriptive as possible so we do not need to try and guess what is happening.
I'm sure that you will find us a bit more helpful to your needs if you do this.

Re: Firefox switches to a Word document
Claude asked his question to see if the 'auto switching' also happens if Word is closed but Excel was open. If it does then that might give us another clue as to why the switching occurs.
Meanwhile, you reported:
I ask this because if your mouse was not pointing at the list but was over the Word icon on the taskbar then when you clicked, thinking you were selecting the next item in the list, your PC would make Word pop-up, since that is what you'd told it to do.
Ken
Meanwhile, you reported:
but what about your mouse? where was that? Were you using it to 'read the list', e.g. by clicking on the next item in the list to work your way down the list?today was reading my Sent Gmail, just reading the list, no keys touched

Re: Firefox switches to a Word document
Hello, Rudi -
Appreciate the confusion. Am trying to pay strict attention to what I am doing in FF when I am switched to an open Word document. As stated in an earlier post, I was merely reading a list of sent Email in Gmail when I was switched.
Will add other instances as they occur.
Thank you

Re: Firefox switches to a Word document
Ken - interesting thought about position of mouse. Am quite positive it was nowhere near the Word icon, but am trying to train myself to be more observant of what I/mouse am/are doing prior to these occurences.
Thank you, Ken.

Maybe not but you didn't answer my question, "Were you using it...?", so can I ask that again? Were you using the mouse as you read the list?uncle wrote:Ken - interesting thought about position of mouse. Am quite positive it was nowhere near the Word icon...

WIll keep the 'documentation' coming....

Re: Firefox switches to a Word document
This might sound a bit a crazy but please humour me...
Are you using a 'proper' mouse or are you running your finger across a trackpad?
If you are using a proper mouse, what sort of surface is it on? A plain coloured one one or one with a strong pattern on it?
Ken
