Or select the text, then select the Shading dropdown in the Paragraph group of the Home tab of the ribbon, and click No Color.
Best wishes,

Re: Remove shading from this text
Thanks guys.
Shading drop down in Para group doesn't clear it.
"Clear Formatting" clears everything back to the default format, I just want the shading gone, everything else left as is.
Have a go with the uploaded sample.

Thank you, I did!
How about providing a bit more information, such as where the formatting came from in the first place, and what version of Word you are using?

Hans, how on earth did you know that? You certainly know some obtuse stuff, but that takes the cake. Nothing short of brilliant!
Wow!

Re: Remove shading from this text
I know that a solution was posted already.
This is just an FYI if you haven't enabled it yet.
Under the Home Ribbon >>Font group the Character Shading command is available.
When I tested it I have to apply the shading and de-apply it on the selected text.

Re: Remove shading from this text
Thanks for that Jolas.
With my Word 2010, I don't have that icon in the font group.
Using the similar one in the Paragraph group doesn't work if you select the para mark as well as the text, which is what I have always done. It will work if you select the text without the para mark.
Hans had 2 steps 1) selecting all the text without period, 2) selecting the period only, but it seems selecting all the text including the period works using the shading tool in the para group.

Re: Remove shading from this text
I don't see character shading in the ribbon either. If I go to the customize ribbon menu then I can see it, but not on the ribbon as displayed
I am running Microsoft 365 - Word Version 2005 (Build 12827.20336 Click-to-Run)

Re: Remove shading from this text
Yep Stuart, that is what I see in Word 2010 too.
Why have Customize ribbon stuff that is selected but not displayed? Although Jolas (above) managed to have it displayed.
Hey Jolas, how did you get it showing on the ribbon?

Re: Remove shading from this text
I am using Office 2013 and it is there by default.
One place you can put it is on the quick access link at the upper left hand corner if you have a need for this particular command.

Re: Remove shading from this text
Thanks Jolas. Only occasional need, so won't put it there.
But I have made a note in my hints doc, so won't have to rely on memory next time I need it. (need what?)
Only MS could come up with that!
Not in 2010, in 2013, not in 365. Go figure.
Are you watching Microsoft?

Re: Remove shading from this text
You can easily reach character shading on the Ribbon with no modifications.
With selected text, use the Borders in the paragraph group.
Go to Borders and Shading and then the Shading tab.
Any changes will be applied to the selected text.
The Borders and Shading Dialog is legacy and can apply to the page, the paragraph or the text.

Re: Remove shading from this text
Thanks Charles.
Doesn't work if you also select the para marker.
Simpler to just select the text without the para marker and use the shading icon in the Paragraph group.
Would be easier if I could select the whole lot including the marker, but I can live with what is there.

Re: Remove shading from this text
Format Painter tool is an alternative way to remove the shading provided there are other unshaded sections or words on the document that you could take the formatting from.

Yep that works. Not as easy as using the shading icon in the Paragraph group though.
Thanks Jolas.
