Our LAN runs at 100 Mbps, but it is likely that most of the Ethernet NICs on the PCs would run at 1 Gbps, if given the opportunity.
Is there any easy way of remotely telling whether a NIC is gigabit-capable, or is it a matter of determining precisely which NIC is on each PC, and looking them up on the interthing?
How to tell if a NIC is Gigabit capable?

Somewhere in between your two extremes is to look at the properties of your NIC in Device Manager

Thanks - yes, it says "Gigabit" in the title!
I was hoping to be able to run a utility on each PC remotely which might give me this info....

I have a nasty feeling that this returns the 'current running speed', not the 'maximum capable speed'?
Looks though I will just have to remote control 21-odd PCs, and look in Device Manager...
