Running Startup via msconfig, One of our PCs lists
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run 9 times. Can 8 of them
be disabled?
Thank you.

Re: Startup - multiple instances same item
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run is a key in the registry; it can contain many entries.
The items in Startup most probably refer to different entries in the Run key, so you should *not* delete or disable them unless you are absolutely certain
- What the exact entry is, and
- That you don't want it to start automatically.

Re: Startup - multiple instances same item
Hi, Hans -
I went to Regedit to look at entries under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run on the 2nd PC and I found the same only 1 [aside from Default REG _SZ (value not set)] in both PCs:
ctfmon.exe REG_ SZ c:\windows\system32\ctfmon.exe
My question: do you still recommend I keep the other 8 listed in msconfig? My aim is to speed up that computer and thought if there are entries pointing to the same entry, they could be disabled???
Thank you.

Re: Startup - multiple instances same item
Could you post a screenshot of the Startup tab of MSConfig? Thanks in advance.

Re: Startup - multiple instances same item
You're probably a good candidate for a copy of WhatInStartup as it's sortable and, I hope that if there are dupes, it will show that to you, in any sequence you choose. It's free and easy to use, AND, in my opinion better than MSCONFIG.curious wrote:My question: do you still recommend I keep the other 8 listed in msconfig? Re: Startup - multiple instances same item
Hans, Hi -
Sorry the screenshot is so sloppy. Never used Paint so am unfamiliar with all its options. Hope this can tell you something.
Thank you.
P.S. When I went to Preview, I get a message "the extension bmp is not allowed." Would I use BBCode for this? If so, is there a tutorial on how to do it?

Re: Startup - multiple instances same item
You should save the screenshot as a .png, .jpg or .gif file; .bmp files are too big and therefore not allowed.
You can then use "Upload attachment" to add the .png, .jpg or .gif file to ypur post.

Re: Startup - multiple instances same item
If you look closely, you'll see that each of the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run entries is for a different application (IntelMeM, LogMeIn, WinPatrol, etc.). I would leave these entries alone - if you disable one or more of them, your computer might not run as intended.
As long as you keep your security software updated and active, you should be OK.

Re: Startup - multiple instances same item
Thank you, Hans. I obviously didn't know how to read/interpret the entries. Your patience, as always, is most appreciated!
