I was unable to access a URL that I frequently visit, via my laptop wireless connection to my cable modem: http://www.oterofcu.org. The browser tries to connect for minutes and minutes, with no result. This is true for Firefox; Firefox after deleting the cache, history, and cookies; Firefox in Safe Mode; and MS IE. A full scan for viruses showed nothing.
However, I was able to access that site from my wired CPU two feet from the laptop via the same cable modem and Internet connection.
Any ideas on what's happening, and how I can fix it?

Plug your laptop in the router using a cable and see if that works.
If it does then we need to look at the Wireless settings, both on the computer and router.

Same result. I disconnected from the Wireless network and was able to access the Internet via a wired connection to Cable One; however I still had the same result, no joy at http://www.oterofcu.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; from my laptop
Two days ago at another location I was able to connect via Comcast cable from my laptop.

Re: URL Blocked on Wireless but not Wired
For the wired try, I plugged directly into the cable modem (same way my Desktop was able to access that site). About all I've done on the laptop was to turn off all programs that try to start when Windows boots. The only recent added programs are Google Toolbar for IE (today), Google Earth update/patch (2/3), and Screenshot Studio Firefox extension (2/2).

Then you have some protection blocking these site(s).
What protection programs are you running?
Also have you checked to see if these sites are blocked in the "Restricted sites" of "Tools, Internet Options, Security"?

Re: URL Blocked on Wireless but not Wired
Has the PC that won't connect got a DNS address in the network settings or does the router supply DNS addresses?

Re: URL Blocked on Wireless but not Wired
DaveA: 1) Symantec Endpoint Protection with current virus defs and recent full scan, Windows Security Center, Windows Firewall, Windows Defender, AVG Identity Protection.
2) In Firefox 3.6, I have Tools, Options, Security" but no "Restricted Sites.
jonwallace: When I am wireless (= laptop can't connect to www. oterofcu.org), my TCP/IPv6 properties indicate: Obtain DNS server address automatically. This is under Network and Sharing Center > Manage network connections > Wireless Network Connection Properties > Internet Protocol Version 6 > Properties.

Any one of the items listed could have a setting that is blocking your accessSundog wrote:DaveA: 1) Symantec Endpoint Protection with current virus defs and recent full scan, Windows Security Center, Windows Firewall, Windows Defender, AVG Identity Protection.

At work, an IT tech solved a problem I was having with a different site by going into about:config from Firefox, and adding the site URL in 2 places: He filtered by "uris" and added the site URL to the 1st and 3rd lines.
I tried that, with no change to the behavior.
Has anyone got any tips of what to change in about:config?
