Does the "Compatibility View" button in IE 8 only show up at sites that may be better viewed in the compatibility mode? I ask because every time I sign into my Gmail account it says that I may be better served if I turn off the "Compatibility View" mode and it gives instructions how to do that. Not only is there no "Compatibility View" button at that site but when I follow their instructions they are not listed in the list of sites using that mode. As an example at this site the button is not visible where at Woody's it is.
Thanks

Re: IE 8 and the Compatibility View Button
I think it's a combination of several factors: the header of the source code for a web page can specify whether the page needs compatibility mode, and Microsoft distributes a list of sites with compatibility problems through Windows Update.
For Gmail, try switching between the options at the bottom:
Perhaps the compatibility button will reappear at some stage.
(I do see the button in Gmail; it's off and I'm not experiencing any problems at the moment)

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Re: IE 8 and the Compatibility View Button
Thanks Hans. I tried a couple of those options and didn't see a button appear but I at least got rid of that message that caused me to start this thread. I'm not having any problems with Gmail either and that is another reason I was wondering what that message was all about.

Re: IE 8 and the Compatibility View Button
I just noticed there is an option by right clicking the menu bar to have the "Compatibility View Button" displayed but still it isn't there at this site or at Gmail's. Is that strange or not?

That's a general switch, not a site-specific switch.

Thanks Hans but shouldn't that make the button visible?HansV wrote:That's a general switch, not a site-specific switch.

Re: IE 8 and the Compatibility View Button
No, it only means that the compatibility button will be displayed if IE8 thinks it's appropriate. If the option is not checked, the compatibility button will not be displayed at all even if it would be appropriate.
Best wishes,
Hans
