I have managed to devise a {field code} that creates a sequence that rises by 20 units at a time, thus :0,20,40,60,80 and so on.
So my life goes on unruffled for now.
But is there a better way using field codes? (attached document)
And hoping that MacroPod sees this, I downloaded and read through "Word Field Maths.zip" from Graham Mayor's site http://www.gmayor.com/downloads.htm and have two questions.
Question 1: I could not find the {PRODUCT} field code in my copy of Word2003. Was it discontinued after Word97?
and
Question 2:
For the life of me I could not see a nested table in the heading of the right-hand column. Is there some sleight-of-hand that I don't know about?
Thanks, Chris

Word 2021 still has the PRODUCT field:

hah! Hans, it will take more than sleight of hand to wean me off Word2003
As far as I can see there is no PRODUCT field code ... ... but there is a PRODUCT field element or operator or function, as you showed. I suspect that I had omitted the equals sign to herald a calculation
Thanks, Chris

A field that starts with an equals sign is a Formula field, and PRODUCT is one of its functions.I suspect that I had omitted the equals sign to herald a calculation

The tutorial advises against using ABOVE, LEFT, etc, as those parameters are unreliable in other contexts, too.
Well, I was being careful to show the nesting didn't have to be obvious...

Re: Field codes - forming a product for a SEQuence
Thanks Paul. I read the caveats before I read the "table heading" example.
FWIW I already have a "table sum" macro (attached) that does what I want.
My question was about the wording in your "Word Field Maths V1_5.doc".
There you mention using a nested table in, I suspect, the top-right cell.
I see no such structure. I created a new (Word2003) document and typed in your data, obtained the SUM showing 15 in each column, then issued a text-to-table conversion on my top-right cell and still see 15.
Using Select All, and re-calculate all the time.
Cheers, Chris

I repeat:
If you click on the 'List of 5 Items' in the table in the tutorial, you'll see that the table selection handle moves depending on whether the left or right cell is clicked. With the right-hand cell clicked, you can use the table selection handle to drag the nested table out of the parent table.I was being careful to show the nesting didn't have to be obvious...

Re: Field codes - forming a product for a SEQuence
OK.
Paul, maybe my version of Word2003 is being obtuse, or else I am really missing something here. This time around I did not open the DOC from the ZIP file, I extracted-all to a ram disk and then opened from the ram disk.
I Show-All, and do everything I can to see any kind of structure.
When I click on either column heading, I do not see a table handle.
To the best of my ability I can see no difference between the two columns. I try convert table to text with/without nested tables and so on.
I note too that the "sum above" is yielding the value 15 in both columns.
I am ready to ask someone to d/l that zip file and see if they can spot-the-difference.
Cheers, Chris

Re: Field codes - forming a product for a SEQuence
That's what you get for using primitive software. Try dragging the right-most table border to the right (not at row 1). Your post of 28 Aug 2022 (post #6 in this thread) seems to show that as having been done, since the nested table's borders are showing.
When you open the tutorial document, the left-most column should be tallying to 20. It seems that MS modified the SUM(ABOVE) behaviour long after the tutorial was written.

Re: Field codes - forming a product for a SEQuence
Thank uou, Paul!
Now I see it. I manually applied a border to the nested tabe to make it stand out. And now I understand your "not obvious" comments. For my post#6 I must have dragged a row 2+ border, and in subsequent posts been focused on "that dratted top-right cell" and been dragging the row 1 border.
So the trick was to have a nested table in that cell, whose (table) size matched the cell size of the host table.
So the problem that the tutorial describes must have been fixed for Word2003 and, I presume, remains fixed in later versions of MSWord. When you open the tutorial document, the left-most column should be tallying to 20. It seems that MS modified the SUM(ABOVE) behaviour long after the tutorial was written.
