Speccy tells me that this HP laptop has an empty slot for RAM. At only 8 GB, it drags a bit at times. I have found over the years that adding memory is usually the least expensive yet biggest bang-for-the-buck upgrade.
The laptop is so old that the RAM is DDR3 and 800mhz. I'm considering populating the empty slot.
Is there a risk in simply adding a new stick instead of replacing them as a pair? I'm yet to find an 8GB stick at 800mhz. I'm assuming that both sticks should run at the same speed, no?

Re: Adding RAM
Risk adding single new stick?
No.
Lack of availability of 800MHz RAM.
Use faster RAM. The motherboard determines the speed of the busses like memory. The RAM is rated UP TO that speed, so DDR3 RAM rated for 1866MHz should work as long as it's pin compatible with the slot on the HP laptop.

Re: Adding RAM
Go to Crucial.com and look for your PC there. They will tell you what RAM is compatible with it. See Curcial desktop RAM.
