Windows 11 has been officially released
If your PC is eligible, Windows 11 will eventually be offered automatically. For most users, this is the best option.
If you can't wait, you can visit this page for various options: Download Windows 11. Don't forget to check whether your PC is compatible first!

Re: Windows 11 has been officially released
I used the Windows Installation Assistant just a short time ago. I did not keep track of how long it took as I continued to use my PC during the installation. All went smoothly. Am running Windows 11 Pro 22000.194 now. So far, all my settings seem to have survived.
Be aware, if you use the installation assistant it will automatically reboot your system 30 minutes after it reaches 100% installed unless you take action.

Re: Windows 11 has been officially released
I decided to live dangerously and installed Windows 11 on my desktop PC. It was painless and fairly quick. It was unavailable for use less than 10 minutes.
I'll have to get used to the new Start menu; the rest looks familiar.
(My 4 year old laptop isn't eligible - its CPU is not supported)

Re: Windows 11 has been officially released
I tried to update my laptop, which meets all the requirements, but it failed with error code 0x8007007f
I will try again later after a reboot.

Re: Windows 11 has been officially released
I found a suggestion here to try running the Installation Assistant by right clicking and run as administrator. This got a bit further, but then failed with "Could not update the system reserved partition".
I guess this laptop is going to be left running Windows 10.

Re: Windows 11 has been officially released
I resolved the system reserved partition problem by deleting all the fonts in the system partition, as suggested on this Microsoft support article.

The installation then got as far as telling me it was about to reboot to continue the installation, but then this appeared. Followed by this message when I clicked OK

Re: Windows 11 has been officially released
I don't see significant improvements in Windows 11, but it appears that a number of features and settings from Windows 10 have been removed.
For example:
- The Start menu cannot be organized in any useful way. Grouping of pinned items is gone.
- The Start menu cannot be resized.
- It is not possible to view All Apps and pinned items side by side.
- One cannot remove the Recommendations section from the Start menu. Even reducing its size is not possible.
- Picture folders don't have preview thumbnails anymore, they are just plain folders.
- One cannot remove the keyboard language indicator from the taskbar.

Another one: the network and volume icons are now permanently displayed in the "taskbar overflow corner" (formerly the tray area or notification area). They cannot be hidden or moved to the popup menu.

Things go "missing" when people unintentionally click-and-drag, so we have to change it for everyone.

One more: the context menu of files and folders shows only a limited number of options. To get the rest, you must click 'Show more options' each time.

Windows 8 in disguise of Windows 10 (with round corners)?

More a kind of "Windows for Dummies". This is the context menu of the taskbar:

And to make it easier for long-term Windows users, the Command Prompt is now called Windows Terminal.

Re: Windows 11 has been officially released
Has anyone noticed ANY feature of Windows 11 that is an improvement? Is there any reason that people should upgrade?

Re: Windows 11 has been officially released
I haven't seen anything that has been improved, except perhaps that Internet Explorer is completely gone now, and Teams is built-in.
Some changes are incomprehensible. For example, utilities such as Character Map, Wordpad and RegEdit aren't listed in the Start menu (there is no Windows Accessories subfolder or Windows Administrative Tools subfolder anymore). The Windows Tool menu item opens a Control Panel window...

Thanks to all who braved this so that I don't have to (and won't, I don't think)

Re: Windows 11 has been officially released
This was not all the fonts in the Windows system folder, but in the Fonts folder in the system reserved partition.

How to Geek now has a registry hack for this particular issue. You can either edit the registry yourself, or download the edit from their site. I suspect that there will be many more "issues" solved with these types of hacks in the coming weeks and months.
