Why are hyperlinks blue?
Interesting history for those who were there at the time, and anyone else interested...

(who had until today thought it was something to do (a) with the angle formed of the bond between hydrogen atoms and oxygen atoms in the water vapor in the atmosphere or (b) something to do with the diameter (measured in Angstroms) of Oxygen atoms and the wavelength of blue light.)

I always like to find out the origin of words/phrases, events, traditions, etc. Thus was an interesting read. TX.

Re: Why are hyperlinks blue?
Hyperlinks are blue because they spend a lot of time waiting for someone to click with them, to make a connection.

And once someone clicks them, they turn purple with rage?

And if you were there really early, the disappointment when every link was dark purple; you had followed every link there was on the web (that you could find). Click, click, click.
(A bit later you could always wait for the Trojan Room coffee machine to fill up.)

Re: Why are hyperlinks blue?
Hans,
I don't believe it was Woody's Lounge. Something with a lizard?
I know that there were at least 3 brown columns. First column listed the topics, second column was the drill down results of what was selected from the first column and the third column was the actual post or drill down results of that was selected from the second column.

Re: Why are hyperlinks blue?
This information begs the question: What are hyperlinks?
Are they only the text that is an explicit URL or does the name also include representative text that can be clicked to navigate to another page. Images are, of course, called icons; but they also can be clicked to navigate to another page. If hyperlinks also refer to, for example, title phrases that can be clicked to change page, then all are not blue.

Re: Why are hyperlinks blue?
Lex the Lounge Lizard was the mascot of Woody's Lounge before it became the Windows Secrets Lounge (now integrated into AskWoody).
You can find some archived pages on the WaybackMachine, for example this one from 2004. As you can see, hyperlinks are blue there too.
Lex was also the Lounge's favicon:

Re: Why are hyperlinks blue?
Woody's lounge also used several style-sheets/skins.
Then there was a version before that (<2001), can't remember now.

Re: Why are hyperlinks blue?
Yes, Woody's Lounge went through several incarnations, the first was from around 1995, I think. The final one was the third or fourth iteration.

Re: Why are hyperlinks blue?
Surely if it were incarnate they would have been a shade of scarlet; or at least carmine?
Carmine's structure seems to lend itself to a smiley of the form :HoHoHo:
Will Scarlet be suitable is, of course, up for discussion.

But then it would have been suitable only for the letter A...

Re: Why are hyperlinks blue?
From my very dusty memory, there were various skins and so it is quite likely that brown was an option.jstevens wrote: ↑05 Oct 2021, 16:16I know that there were at least 3 brown columns. There was also the option to view in flat ( ) or threaded(?) ( ) mode, which, IIRC, in effect gave you an expanded view of a thread in a separate column. But I may be wildly off the mark.
See also the old FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) which may bring back memories for some...
