nouvelle cuisine
On the table, in the restaurant we just ate in, salt, pepper and sanitiser.
I did sprinkle a little salt on the chunky chips that came with my meal but declined the option to add sanitiser.

Re: nouvelle cuisine
It similar to finger bowl water in fancy restaurants. Always comical when people accidently drink from it.

My favourite Thai restaurant/café also has on each table an exotic-looking plastic flower in a small container. I don't think anyone has tried to eat that yet...
I'm never quite sure whether the cleverly-carved carrot which comes on your plate should be eaten, or simply admired and left, decorously.

Isn't it normal for alcohol to be offered at a restaurant?

Some 45 years ago, I was staying in a youth hostel in Cork, Ireland.
During dinner, bowls of gravy were placed on the tables. One of the guests immediately picked up a bowl, brought it to his mouth and drank it in one gulp...

At least your hapless guest did not put his foot in it!

Are Aussies known for drinking gravy?
(The person in question didn't look but looks can deceive of course)

Re: nouvelle cuisine
While on holiday in France, I have eaten at least twice in restaurants named "Le pied dans le plat" (The foot in the plate). I had to suppress the tendency to check my plate for footprints when it was served.
Best wishes,
Hans

Re: nouvelle cuisine
Not at all.
It was the phrase "drank it in one gulp" that caught my attention. I speak from experience.

Re: nouvelle cuisine
Hans, I don't care which wine you ordered; footprints never show up in wine if it has been properly filtered!
Of course, there may be numerous hansprints on the outside of the bottle (he said, wobbling back on-topic)
Cheers

Re: nouvelle cuisine
Yes - that's what the phrase refers to. "To put one's foot in it".Leif wrote: ↑29 Jul 2021, 15:25Footprints of the elephant in the room?

My pedantic inclination would make me question whether your hands actually 'consume' the alcohol, since undoubtedly it evaporates quite rapidly from the surface of the skin.

Hi John.
Surely this would depend on whether or not you were a liquor-licker?
Cheers
