Although it has rained long and hard here (almost 50 mm/2 inches of rain in 24 hours), we haven't experienced serious problems, The situation in the south-east of the country is disastrous, however - hundreds or thousands of houses flooded, a bridge swept away, ...

I'm certain you recognized the opening lines to Frost's "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening." I was remiss in not crediting Frost but assumed all would be familiar with the lines.
