I have a rectangular image that I want to crop in a circle shape.
- First, I select Crop | Aspect Ratio | 1:1. This crops the image into a square.
- Then I select Crop | Oval (I cannot find circle).
When I choose Oval, the previously cropped sides of the photo feed back into the image and cause it to become compressed horizontally such that it no longer looks natural. I want to keep the cropped dies of the photo out and just get it to crop in a circle shape. How do I do this?

Re: Cropping image to circle shape
After selecting Format > Crop > Aspect Ratio > 1:1 > Crop, do the following:
- Select File > Options > Advanced.
- Scroll down to the section 'Image Size and Quality'.
- Tick the check box 'Discard editing data'. (This will apply to the current document only).
- Click OK.
- Save the document.
- If necessary, select the image again.
- Now select Format > Crop > To Shape > Oval.
Best wishes,
Hans

Why didn't you try it? You could have known in 2 minutes...
(Yes, it does work in PowerPoint exactly the same way as in Word)

Re: Cropping image to circle shape
I tried two methods (I may be misunderstanding the problem) using Word 365 :
1. Insert the picture.
Crop to Oval
Holding down shift (the technique in PPT for creating a circle rather than an oval) adjust sides and top of picture. Guesswork, but I got a pretty good circle.
2. Insert the picture
Crop aspect ratio 1:1
Select oval - and it gave me a perfect circle

Here's an even easier way:
Insert > Shapes, choose the oval tool, and hold down Shift while drawing a circle of the desired size. The Shape Format ribbon opens when you release the mouse button.
On the Shape Format ribbon, click the Shape Fill button and choose Picture:
Select a source for the picture, such as a local file ("From a File") or one from a stock library. It's automatically inserted with the correct aspect ratio. The only drawback is that you can't control what part of the picture is included inside the circle.

Re: Cropping image to circle shape
Hi Jay, when I try that with a wide (non-square) picture in Word 2019, it becomes compressed horizontally, just like JMT356 described.
The screenshot below shows the original picture at the top, the result of the method I described on the bottom left, and of your method on the bottom right.

Now that you mention it, I see the same change of aspect ratio in the shot that I posted, but it's not as noticeable. The original picture is taller than it is wide, and the fill compressed the height by about 25%. As the subject of the painting would have said, "Oh Noooo!"
