I have a need to count words in a selection of text in MS Word. The ? help doesn't give me anything but document wide word count. I found on the interwebs that versions of Word that have a TOOLS menu in the ribbon can do this; however, my version of Word (which I don't know because there is not Help/About menu choice) does not have a TOOLS menu that I can find.
Can anyone help? I'm doing a rewrite for an editor and have lost access to this critical, for me, tool.

Re: Word Count
Hi, Bob -- try this:
Go to Customize Ribbon. In 'Choose command from' window, click down arrow, choose All Commands. Scroll left panel to Word Count, click on it. Word Count now show in right panel.Add this to Quick Access Toolbar, Select text, then click the Word Count
Can add this to Quick Access Toolbar
Hope this helps

Re: Word Count
You can add the Word count to the Status bar on the bottom by right-clicking on it. It then will show the word count for selected text.

Re: Word Count
The only versions of Word that have a Tools menu are 2003 and earlier in Windows and (I think) 2016 and earlier on the Mac.

Re: Word Count
Thanks for the suggestions, folks!
I finally found the option. It exists in REVIEW in the far left menu block that includes copy and paint.

Did you try right-clicking on the status bar to add this. It works very well...

Re: Word Count
I could see the document word count; however I was focusing on rewriting paragraphs and couldn't seem to make the status bar numbers reflect just the paragraph. I was probably overlooking something very obvious.
I eventually found the Word Count tools icon as noted above.
Thanks for the tip, Stuart. I'll keep that in mind and try harder to be certain I can count just the selection.

Re: Word Count
To get the Status bar to reflect only parts of the document, you need to select the text you want it to count.

Re: Word Count
Thank you, Charles. I had not noticed that the count changed when I selected text. That is a very handy feature when doing rewrites.
