Operation has been cancelled due to restrictions...
I recently uninstalled Firefox as my browser and reinstalled an updated version of Firefox. Now, I am unable to use hyperlinks in Outlook 2007 or Excel 2007; I suspect this is the case in all the office products although I have only tried to open links in Outlook and Excel.
I tried setting Firefox as the default browser in Windows 10 and restarted the computer.... no change. Then I tried setting MS Edge as the default browser and restarted... again, no change.
Anyone have any Ideas? The pop up message I receive is
This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.
LOL, I am the system administrator here at home and I have no clue what else I can do.

Re: Operation has been cancelled due to restrictions...
Yes, it seems to be linked to uninstalling one browser but somehow another isn't installed or registered as default; there have been reports of other scenarios as well I think.
If you do a search for your error message, or what you experience, you'll find plenty of results.

Thanks Argus, I did just that and was led to taking the steps I did which did not seem to help.

Re: Operation has been cancelled due to restrictions...
You did set Internet Explorer as default browser (if only temporarily), and click Reset Internet Explorer Settings... in the Advanced tab of Tools > Internet Options in Internet Explorer?
Best wishes,
Hans

I don't actually have Internet Explorer as far as I know - I have Microsoft Edge and I set it as default and looked but did not find any way to reset the settings.

To set Internet Explorer as default:
- Click the Start button or press the Windows key.
- Click Settings (the gear wheel).
- Click Apps.
- Click Default apps.
- Click on the current default browser (Edge).
- Select Internet Explorer from the list.
- Close the Settings app.
You can use the same method to set another browser as default when all is working properly again.
You can start Internet Explorer as follows:
- Click the Start button or press the Windows key.
- Type internet explorer and press Enter.
- You can also find it in Start > All Apps > Windows Accessories.
Then do the following:
- Click the Tools button (the gear wheel) near the upper right corner.
- Select Internet Options from the menu.
- Activate the Advanced tab.
- Click the Reset... button and confirm.
You will have to restart Windows.
- Click the Start button or press the Windows key.
- Click Settings (the gear wheel).
- Click Apps.
- Click Default apps.

Re: Operation has been cancelled due to restrictions...
In my searching I saw instructions to reset Edge yet when I go into my Windows 10 Settings - Apps & Features, the Edge application is not listed although it shows up as the default browser when I look at default apps.

Edge is not listed in Apps and Features because it is an integral feature of Windows 10 that cannot be uninstalled.

Hans,
I went through all the steps you listed twice and I still am unable to open a link from Outlook and, I presume, Excel.

Have you tried the steps listed under "Import a Registry Key" in https://www.slipstick.com/problems/this ... trictions/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ?
Best wishes,
Hans

Re: Operation has been cancelled due to restrictions...
I will try it now. I saw that earlier but somehow thought I needed to import a registry setting and I had no to import from. Will be back in a few.

Re: Operation has been cancelled due to restrictions...
I completed all the registry edits for the entries I had... I did not have a xhtm key. I restarted windows and still am unable to open a link.
I further looked at the import a registry fix and the author has a link to one - when I save it.. it is saved as a text file so when I double click on it (to run it), it simply opens in Notepad.

Change the extension of the file to .reg. Double-clicking should then import the entry into the Windows registry.
Best wishes,
Hans

Re: Operation has been cancelled due to restrictions...
The file name is currently
restrictions_fix.reg.txt
should I change it to
restrictions_fix.reg or restrictions_fix.reg.reg
?
Oh... here is what the file contains:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\htmlfile\shell\open\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\IEXPLORE.EXE\" -nohome"
restrictions_fix.reg.txt
should I change it to
restrictions_fix.reg or restrictions_fix.reg.reg

I hate to be a pest however, after running that registry fix... no change. Still cannot open a link from Outlook.

Re: Operation has been cancelled due to restrictions...
If the other things suggested in the Slipstick article don't work either, I'm out of ideas. Reinstalling your computer from scratch would be a last resort...
Best wishes,

Yikes... that is not going to happen. Okay, thanks for your time and effort. If I find a fix, I will post it back here.
