Any Video Converter
Perusing through the thread on trustworthy Free Software I noted in post 147955 the link for AVC but clicking on the said link does not bring up the screen shot shown in that post, would appreciate one that does. Also a link to a free video editing prog. Dave.

Re: Any Video Converter
Hi Dave,
Here is the link to the latest version: Any Video Converter
I use it quite regularly to convert my iPhone videos into mp4 format. It also contains some good tools for cropping, adjusting, resizing and trimming videos.
I have not installed it recently, so if you do download it and install, be vigilant with the install packager. Select custom and ensure you deactivate any junkware options during the install wizard. The product is safe and free of malware and adware.
This is a screenshot of my copy as of current...

I found this link simply by following the trail from the link Rudi posted:

Ken
edited to add: using the link I give should automatically trigger the download and give you a save file option

Hi Dave,
As Ken points out, this is the free (non trial) version.
A little further down on the web page it confirms it too...

Re: Any Video Converter
..............followed the advice given BUT Running the download through Avira detected a gremlin identified as OpenCand.Gen. rather disappointing after following the instructions to the letter and the assurance that it is Kosher. Has anyone else encountered this rogue intruder and is there a foolproof way to get my hands on A.V.C about which I read so many good comments? Regards Dave.

Re: Any Video Converter
That's more than likely adware within the installer for AVC, which is why you should always select "custom installation" when installing free software.

Re: Any Video Converter
I see Claude has beat me to it. Avira will have found the 'extra' software that invariably comes with 'free' software.
These days the chances of finding any sort of free software that is truly free, as in costing no money AND being free of additional software are minimal. It takes people time (and as everybody knows time is money) to write and maintain the code so it is not surprising that the author wants to make some money from their efforts. If the author chooses to 'give it a way for free', it is reasonable that he/she should still try to make some money by selling advertising space around the software.
Given that background, the best way to minimise (NB not eliminate) the chance of unwanted software ending up on you machine is:
1) Download the software form the author's own website NOT a third party site.
2) Do NOT accept the installation defaults, always look for a 'Custom installation' option so you can review what the installer is installing and tick/untick options as necessary. If there is no obvious 'Custom' option then watch very carefully as you step trough the installer so that you can tick/untick options as necessary.

Re: Any Video Converter
Many thanks for all the advice, downloaded A.V.C from the link Rudi gave in post 177871 BUT still cant seem to grab an entirely clean version as OpenCany.Gen seems to sneek in every time. I clicked the "Remove" button but the offending gremlim will not even move to quarantine so I can proceed, then AVIRA tells me to shut down then run a complete scan on booting up. BIG shame as there are many good reports about this freeby which [as an alternative to the "ConvertXtoDVD version that I have] (ancient) does not allow for editing. ie removing unwanted portions of a video. Back to the drawing board....Cheers Dave.

Re: Any Video Converter
Hi Dave,
It is wise to ebb more on the cautious side of things when installing freeware and I will always advise to not install if you are unsure, but as others above have indicated, when you run your antivirus app through the installer, it is no doubt going to pick up gremlins. These are not necessarily in the package you plan to install, like AVC in this case, but are inside the junkware that is packaged with AVC in the installer. Please note: I have installed this updated version of AVC about 3 weeks ago and it is safe to use. There was 1 instance of junkware in the installer that you can safely disable if you choose the custom installation. Since installing it, my antivirus has made a default scan on my PC and I have also run the latest version of MalwareBytes and both did not flag anything on my system.
In light of all this though, it is still your choice if you want to install or not.

Re: Any Video Converter
I sincerely appreciate your patience guys and might add that each time I have run AVC past AVIRA it was BEFORE the installation stage so I did not get as far as chosing the "Custom" option that avoids Adware etc. If it is not too much trouble for someone to spell out the sequence of steps thus enabling me to summount this niggling hurdle I would be delighted. Running AVIRA shows 1 unwanted prog and [despite not having got as far as installing AVC the report says the systen cannot be repaired....how come I ask myself ??????????/

Re: Any Video Converter
Hi Dave,
I used the link in my reply to your opening post to access the page from which to download the application...
I captured screenshots of the entire process I followed to download and install AVC.
There was only one screenshot I did not capture during the process; the one that prompts what language to install. I left it at English and chose Next...
The only step to watch out for was in step 8 where you should deactivate the extra packaged software
If you follow this process you will have a clean install of this application.
BTW: This process can apply to software that you download from any reputable site, like the download pages of the vendors that own the software.
Out of interest: I ran Malwarebytes after the installation and it picked up two hits for PUP (Potentially Unwanted Programs). I didn't think of running MalwareBytes before the install, but I'm pretty sure the PUP's did not come from the install. Besides, I was able to securely quarantine the PUP's anyways afterwards.

Thanks Rudi............will follow those steps and feed back on outcome. Cheers Dave.
SORRY to be a pain......only got as far as step 3 and this warning flashed on screen. I assume you must not have encountered the same result! Would clicking the "Remove" suffice seeing the last time I did so the second screenshot [Avira report] ensued suggesting it was still lurking in the bowels of the HD? (The last two lines of the report concern me)

Re: Any Video Converter
I think that Avira will always terminate the install. If I really wanted the program, I would pause Avira temporarily, then run the install (paying close attention to Rudi's screenshots) then re-enable Avira. If you want to add braces to your belt, then you could run Malwarebytes and do a virus scan when everything's done.

Re: Any Video Converter
Hi Dave,
I have McAfee AV (which did not flag on install). Whether that is a setting in the AV, I would not know?
To be honest, the OCSetupHlp.dll was the exact file that MalwareBytes picked up when I ran it after the install if AVC (referenced in my previous post). The quarantine from MalwareBytes on this file was successful, and just to be sure, I ran a scan with McAfee before posting this reply and my AV gave my PC a clean bill of health. So, bottom line...I think you have more than enough info in this thread to make an informed decision. We can give you the facts, but you alone will need to decide if you want to go ahead with this.

.and I agree with you Rudi regarding the extensive advice given and received with humble appreciation. I will create a System Restore point for safety then venture with caution into -what for me, with fingers crossed - is a foggy zone. Many thanks Dave.
ps........just done some research and am not quite so troubled now that I have discovered the folllowing information about [PUA/OpenCandy.Gen] which infers it is NOT MALICIOUS. The only reservation I now have lies in the highlighted phrasephrase as I am anythiong but an expert on these matters. - Again Many thanks gents. Dave.

Re: Any Video Converter
Hi
I caught this Thread after looking for an alternative to my “Koyote Free Video convertor”. ( The Koyote Free Video had been brilliant converting just about anything to just about any other format. Sadly I had to dump it as it kept being caught by my virus checking as the source of dodgy stuff )
So I tried the AVC suggested here. It was a partial success.
The installation followed a slightly different progression to that shown here in the screenshots, so I thought I would share my experience...
_.....................
Start with Rudis Link
http://www.eileenslounge.com/viewtopic. ... 97#p177871" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.any-video-converter.com/prod ... ideo_free/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
_1) I get his screenshot 1 ( http://www.eileenslounge.com/viewtopic. ... 97#p178058" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )
So download it, open it
_2) I get his screenshot 2
_3) Then it changes a bit
AVC3.JPG
http://imgur.com/BdRC4Hg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
And carefully I do not select the Big Install, - instead I select the smaller “Anpassen” ( Customise )
_....................
_4 ) This looks ok, _..
AVC4.JPG
http://imgur.com/Zi2c8pO" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
_....so I continue ( By the way, It crashes if I try to pick any other path ?? )
_5) This looks dodgy, so I do not click on further. Instead I click on the two small bits to Install “anpassen” ( Customize )
AVC5.JPG
http://imgur.com/1P2Ag8J" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
That reveals three boxes that are already checked. SO
_6) I UNCHECK THEM, ( make sure they are empty ) before going further
AVC6.JPG
http://imgur.com/0IBSew4" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
-7) Then it installs
AVC7.JPG
http://imgur.com/J9AsC99" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
_8) Finally it tells me it is done, and I have a shortcut on my Desktop
AVC8.JPG
http://imgur.com/DvrJzkE" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
So you really have to be careful what you click , tick, and importantly un click
_...................___
( A Browser opens up with some Adds, but I just close and ignore that )
_...............................
_9) I start it. It asks me if I want to update it, _..
AVC9.JPG
http://imgur.com/1IY9ktn" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
_.. I Cancelled that – usually that sort of thing takes you to a version that you have to pay for )
_10) For some reason it would not let me drag a video in ? , but it seemed to let me paste it in,
AVC10.JPG
http://imgur.com/mjvnUY1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
_... But it did not actually paste anything in...
So that initially put the mockers on Any Video Converter.. it did not work for me initially.
I tried all that on my old Aspire4810TZG 4GB RAM Computer on Operating system Vista
I borrowed a Windows 7 64 Bit 4GB RAM ( self made ) Computer and repeated...
Same steps as above , 1) – 9), but at step 10) it works !
I went back to my old computer , uninstalled, re installed, restarted the computer, pulled the plug, re started ( which took forever, so I went for a jog ) .. Eventually it started working on my old computer as well. I have no idea why it suddenly worked. A few hours later it still is working
_11) So I chose an output format which looked close to what I wanted ( I actually wanted for WMV format with resolution WMV 1080 x 1920 )
AVC11.JPG
http://imgur.com/mjvnUY1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
( _12) I changed the default path through a Dialogue box that popped up after hitting the wheel ( the wheel is situated towards top right )
AVC12.JPG
http://imgur.com/pId2l3E" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
_13 ) Hit convert , after which it seemed to be doing what it should:
AVC13.JPG
http://imgur.com/d2hivd2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
_14) Double click on the Video ( How to extract data from multiple tables in a web page-VZrRICLwMnY_WMV V81280x720 ) in the Folder where it is and, Bingo, the Video plays ! :)
So I have a partial solution ( the WMV resolution is only 1280 x 720 and not the full 1080 x 1920 which I wanted )
AVC14.JPG
http://imgur.com/c1dL8qS" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
( _15 I get the offer always of an update to a version that costs , I clicked No Thanks )
AVC15.JPG
http://imgur.com/i4xvfI2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )
_.........
I ran Microsoft Security Essentials on the Windows 7 64 Bit 4GB RAM Computer and no new problems were found. I am doing the same on my old machine – but that unusually takes 4 days to run on my old machine, - if it finds any problems I will report back.
_........
Anyone got any recent more up to date experience on this or any other free converters?
It would be nice to have an alternative, especially if it did the WMV in the full ( maximum I think ) resolution of 1080 x 1920

FreemakeVideoConverter -According to their download page- has over 9 million users one of whom I am and delighted with it's performance at that but it does not have an "Edit" feature http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/ for that I use http://www.iwisoft.com/videoconverter/ Both free and easy to use. Cheers Dave.
