cursor unresponsive
For no apparent reason, pointing to an icon on the desktop does not immediately bring it to focus so it can be opened and intermitently the computer just refuse to respond to commands. I have run Avira, Ccleaner & Malawarebytes but nothing phoney was found. I thought to conduct a System Restore but despite being convinced I have over the recent past created numerous such points the system says there are none. Any suggestions please? Thanks Dave.

Re: cursor unresponsive
Have you tried rebooting?
If the mouse is wireless, are the batteries fresh?

Regarding the Restore Points, How much disk space have you assigned to Win 7 Drive.Dave Davison wrote:For no apparent reason, pointing to an icon on the desktop does not immediately bring it to focus so it can be opened and intermitently the computer just refuse to respond to commands. Also Click Control Panel>System>System Protection.
Check to see if SR is enabled on the drive, click Configure And you can move the slider to how much space to use. I usually set for 10% but it may depend on how much space you have available.

Somehow, I got the two attachments transposed. Not wanting to add confusion.

Re: cursor unresponsive
I placed the insertion point where I wanted a screenshot, then clicked the "Place inline" button for that screenshot. Similar for the other one.
Best wishes,
Hans

Re: cursor unresponsive
.........on the "Freezing" issue, when the computer is bugging me with this anomaly (ie) nothing happening when the cursor is clicked on some icon or any tab -like trying to close a file-, if I hit the "Windows" key on the keyboard the start menu appears (as expected) but hovering the cursor over the start button on the task bar does not bring it to focus [will not activate] don't know if that extra factor suggests anything further. Yet another anomaly that might shed light on the problem is this; normally when one right clicks the screen the attached menu pops up (as expected) but it also appears if the left mouse button is clicked though of course it should normally not. The System Restore issue I will look at when I get round to it as it is of secondary importance at the moment. That is if I don't explode in the meantime. Thanks Dave. ps. sorry should have indicated that the mouse is not wireless and I have tried three separate mice which seems to eradicate that as a cause.

Re: cursor unresponsive
....just checked the SR setting and note that it is set at just 5% so tried to increase it to 10% but was unable to getting the attached message.......yet deeper in the mire it seems. Cheers Dave.

Re: cursor unresponsive
In Control Panel > System > System Protection, check the list of Available Drives (see the screenshot in viking33's reply). Do you see anything special there?
Best wishes,
Hans

Re: cursor unresponsive
Try the following:
- Select the one that says "(C:) (Missing)".
- Click Configure...
- Select "Turn off system protection".
- Click OK.
- Hopefully, the "missing" drive will disappear from the list.
- Now select "Local Disk (C:) (System)".
- Click Configure...
- If necessary, select "Restore system settings and previous versions of files" again.
- Drag the slider to 10%.
- Click OK.
Does it work now?

Re: cursor unresponsive
BobArch2 asked in the first reply in this thread whether you had tried rebooting the computer. Does the problem with selecting icons and with right-click menus persist after rebooting?
Best wishes,
Hans

Re: cursor unresponsive
.................pardon my ignoranxce Hans, if the term "Rebooting" means simply "switching off the computer" then on again, YES, it persists every time I switch on. So disappointed as the computer was only purpose built a few months ago I but thought I'd seek advice from you experts before bothering the shop owner in case it could be rectified by some small tweeks. Thanks again Dave.

Re: cursor unresponsive
Yes, I did mean turning the computer off, then on again.
Perhaps something is wrong with the mouse driver; it might be best to ask the shop owner to check that.

Re: cursor unresponsive
......did just that and apart from unticking a few boxes thus preventing some programs from running at start up he concluded there seems nothing wrong with the setup suggesting the fault lies with the mouse but seeing I have tried three such devivces I shall have to wait and see if what he did makes any difference. Will keep you up to date with the outcome. Thanks anyway Dave.
