Re: Hmmm...I'm not that gullible...
Well I'm no expert but I have been to and on Lake Erie a few times in my life and could never see across to the Canadian border. The other distance you ask about I have never tried but it is even longer and I believe the answer is no also.

I think the distances are too great - definitely so from Sandusky to Buffalo.
Best wishes,

Goodness....that is larger than I expected then (that you cannot even see land)!....
Besides the ocean, I have never seen a lake where you cannot see the other side.
It must be quite erie to think you are landlocked but not be able to see the other side.
Wow!

Re: Hmmm...I'm not that gullible...
Personally I don't believe this because even after going out on a boat a few miles I could never see the Canadian side but I do not recall how clear the days were when I tried.Scientists say it's a mirage, but others swear that when the weather is right, Clevelanders can see across Lake Erie and spot Canadian trees and buildings 50 miles away.

I can't see what you're getting atRudi wrote:I'm just trying to picture the visual surface area of the lake in question....
OK.
My second ex-wife used to claim that from the top of the CN tower you could, excellent conditions etc, see the mist/spray rising from Niagara Falls (Blue line).
I always suspected she was seeing the steam from the coke quenching towers in Hamilton (Purple line).
Steam plumes from quenching towers are WAY more spectacular/"solid"/visible than the mist that has risen out of a deep gorge.
P.S. Consider also limited lake-level visibility due to water droplets in the air.
P. P.S. To give you an idea of how gullible she was, she fell for me ...

Wikipedia: For an observer on the ground with eye level at h = 5 ft 7 in (1.70 m), the horizon is at a distance of 2.9 miles (4.7 km). For an observer standing on a hill or tower 100 feet (30 m) in height, the horizon is at a distance of 12.2 miles (19.6 km).Rudi wrote:Continuing with lake topic....
Question for someone who has stood on the shores of lake Erie:
If one stood at Cleveland, I assume one could see the "land" horizon at Learnington, or is the distance too vast to see across?
Similarly, would one be able to see the "land" horizon from Sandusky to Buffalo...ignoring the land to the left and right?
I'm just trying to picture the visual surface area of the lake in question....
TX
Lake Erie has an average width of 57 miles, so you'd need to be at a height of several hundred feet to see across the lake, assuming the weather was very, very clear!

So Rudi, assuming the lake is several hundred feet deep, and that you haven't got the population of the world swimming in it, you simply drain the lake and, voila! - you're standing on a hill.

TX PJ.
93km wide ( that is alarming. It shows how negligent I am here where our lakes are a drop in the bucket compared to these!!!)
I actually looked at some images which further awoke me to its scale! (amazing images - it literally looks like the ocean - which of course I am familiar with).
Leif, the lake it only 19 meters deep on average, but a hill I'd still be standing on.

Rudi, to put the size of the Great Lakes into context, they contain 21% of the world's surface fresh water and 54% of the world's liquid fresh water by volume. Their total surface area is 94,250 square miles (244,106 km2), and the total volume (measured at the low water datum) is 5,439 cubic miles (22,671 cubic km).
That's one long sip of water!
