Get the freshest bread (US only)
Did You Know?
The twist ties and plastic tags used to seal bread bags in the United States are color coded by the day of the week the bread was baked on.
The color code is: The color codes are alphabetical making it easy to remember/work out.
This visual cue is relatively useless to consumers but is very handy for harried stocking clerks filling the shelves every day.
Seems you guys don't get any fresh bread on Wednesdays and Sundays. Guess those days are reserved for pizza's

Wouldn't it have been easier to do Red, Orange, Yellow, Green...?

Re: Get the freshest bread (US only)
I applaud your cogent and well-reasoned argument.
I can't see that one way is any better than the other. Any arbitrary set of colours could have been used, in any order.
What will happen is that an operative will use the appropriate tag, remembering that pink => Monday, or Monday => pink, a purely one-to-one correspondence.
Are you seriously suggesting that someone will 'work out' that Friday => white because of the alphabetic order of the five colours used?
{Apparently this code is not used by every bread manufacturer in the US, according to Snopes...]

I'd agree, but when do we ever have that 8th day?John Gray wrote:Wouldn't it have been easier to do Red, Orange, Yellow, Green...?

Who, me? Seriously?John Gray wrote:Are you seriously suggesting that someone will 'work out' that Friday => white because of the alphabetic order of the five colours used?
Not necessarily, but it gives a reason behind why the colours were chosen in that order, just in case anyone asks. No one bakes on a Wednesday because it could potentially cause an association problem - i.e. W for Wednesday, and W for White. Similarly, would S be for Saturday or Sunday? Simpler just to ignore Sunday.
And as for Rudi's response (and before Claude gets in on the act) - the 8th day follows the 7th. Just ask any Adventist.

Re: Get the freshest bread (US only)
I'll have to do some research down here in the RS of A.
We ONLY have white tags on our bread. Either it means that we get fresh bread EVERY day or we only get fresh bread on a FRIDAY! ( I truly hope its the former!!)

Re: Get the freshest bread (US only)
IMHO, the colors should follow the color code standard order for resistors (Black, Brown, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet, Gray, White) with the understanding that Sunday = 0 = Black.
Then all you have to remember is the mnemonic "Bad, Boys, R(ooops! Can't use that word in a "family-friendly" forum!), Our, Young, Girls, But, Violet, Gives, Willingly"
What could be easier?

Perfect! And to continue that theme, we need to determine what series, so I'm suggesting E24, then we can pin it down to what hour on what day the bread was baked.PJ_in_FL wrote:IMHO, the colors should follow the color code standard order for resistors...
Then there's tolerance, but that would confuse those who are gluten intolerant.
Thinking about it, perhaps there's a simpler way, just using alphanumeric characters....

To confuse matters even more, naughty Mrs Bairds has gone and selected a whole other set of colours...

Re: Get the freshest bread (US only)
That's OK but using black print on black tags, for example, would be really hard to read.PJ_in_FL wrote:IMHO, the colors should follow the color code standard order for resistors (Black, Brown, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet, Gray, White) with the understanding that Sunday = 0 = Black.

BTW, those little tags make good ID markers on that tangle of cables in the back of your desktop. They fit on most cables very well. Use Sharpie pen to write on them.Rudi wrote:To confuse matters even more, naughty Mrs Bairds has gone and selected a whole other set of colours...
