Re: what does this message suggest
The message means - as it says - that Outlook Express failed to connect to your ISP.
It may be a temporary glitch, especially since you were able to send emails earlier today. Try again in half an hour or in an hour to see if the problem persists.
If the problem remains, there could be several possible explanations:
- A problem with your internet connection.
- Your ISP has blocked outgoing messages.

Re: what does this message suggest
0x800CCC0E in my experience is a mail server error, for which the answer is usually to wait until it gets better.
If it doesn't get better check through the ntlworld settings in this list. [I don't like the value the error message shows for your SMTP port]
Otherwise change your SMTP and POP server addresses to those relevant for virginmedia.com (which I use, even though I have a blueyonder email address!)...

Re: what does this message suggest
Looking at the Virgin Media community forums indicate that VM mails have been problematical for the last 4-6 hours. I myself am now getting a (different) error when trying to send, but WebMail seems still to be functioning. It may be associated with a changeover of the viginmedia.com email domain to come under the wing of the Google email servers.

Re: what does this message suggest
Thanks for the replies, just tried O.E. and it connected immediately so there must have been a fault with the Virgin Media, this is not a regular occurrence or I would not have asked the question so if the same message pops up again I'll just wait and try later. Thanks Dave

Re: what does this message suggest
Hi Dave,
your SMTP port should be 587, with SSL ticked for SMTP & POP. My server requires authentication should also be ticked.

The very top of the dialog box where it says "Outlook Express" says to me that you need to find a new email client.

Re: what does this message suggest
I would have said that Outlook Express is a perfectly acceptable client for Windows XP mail use.

Re: what does this message suggest
I'm with John, if all you want is a simple POP3 client for XP then OE is perfectly adequate but I would say wouldn't I as I use OE on XP
