RUDI:
I was thinking of the other, similar topic involving Dachshund where it was shown with yellow matter oozing from its body whilst lying on a bun pretending to be a Hot-Dog.
Anne had tricked me and started a new topic and I failed to spot it.
Getting old I guess !

It's a killer to read? Little lines and curly squiggles?

Re: hot dogs!
I'm now able to read it slowly... and I've taken 2 classes in it and studied it for several years. I can speak it a little but read more. There was an interesting cognitive shift that occurred while studying it; for the whole first class, it looked like little squiggly lines and dots. But then as the second class started, all of a sudden, I began seeing it as writing. Now I have to be careful when writing in cursive because I'll start out in English but shift into Arabic. It's actually a very interesting language.
Found out from our language teacher (who is a writer, originally from Baghdad) that the word for "husband" and the word for "fool" is just a wee bit different... you have to listen for the way it's pronounced! We all thought that was hilarious.
I worked with someone from the Northern part of Iraq as I was learning the language, too, so I sound like I have a Northern Iraqi/Baghdad accent when I speak. An Egyptian doctor in the department of health pointed that out to me when he was giving me language pointers.
Egyptian Arabic is pronounced quite differently than Standard Arabic. All the hard J sounds in Standard Arabic come out as soft G sounds in Egyptian. So to avoid confusion, the doctor would just write me notes in Arabic and I'd write back.

Re: hot dogs!
Very interesting.
I was studying Russian for about a year, talking and writing. Also very interesting, and apparently the language originates from several European languages, including Dutch! Yep...there is some Dutch/Afrikaans words in there like pants - broekie, and I think chair is stol...or is that table?? Anyways, it was fun to learn, but after a while you hit a brick wall when it comes to the higher levels.

Re: hot dogs!
Really?! How interesting!
Learning Arabic helped me at work... knowing that there's no "P" sound helped me finally decipher one analyst's message that the "herberlinks were broken"... finally figured out it meant "hyperlinks". She was from Kurdistan--bright as a penny--but "P" was a sound she just couldn't make.
