Defragment and Optimize Drives – Windows 10
Has something changed? I could not find the tools that I think I used to be able to find in Windows File Explorer. I know I used to do a manual optimization and defrag every once in a while. I also know I never had to type Defragment and Optimize Drives in the Start menu or the search icon to do it. Granted I have not done it manually in some time.
Has the ability to get to Windows Tools in Windows File Explorer disappeared?

Select a drive such as C: in File Explorer.
You should now see a new tab Drive Tools in the ribbon.
The first button in this tab is Optimize.
Or:
Right-click a drive such as C: in File Explorer.
Select Properties from the context menu.
Activate the Tools tab of the Properties dialog.

Thank you. I thought I had done that but since it works both ways you suggested, apparently I messed up somewhere along the way.

I gave up defragging my drives along time ago, the effort never seemed to produce enough benefit.
I've certainly never defragged my SSDs.

Re: Defragment and Optimize Drives – Windows 10
Windows 10 by default optimizes drives automatically on a weekly schedule. It takes the type of drive (rotating disk, SSD) into account.
So there shouldn't be a real need to initiate drive optimization manually.

Given what is said above, it is not clear to me what I should make of this report for the C disk and System Reserved area.

Re: Defragment and Optimize Drives – Windows 10
Mine is set to optimize weekly and that is why it has been a long time since I ran a manual optimization. I didn't think it would fix anything but I also didn't think it would do any harm.
