Re: unexpected location
he says calmly, glossing over the fact it sits on a small roundabout surrounded by houses, which to my non-Dutch mind is what makes it really unusual.HansV wrote:A windmill with 5 sails - that's unusual!

Re: unexpected location
Windmills in city neighbourhoods are not unusual in The Netherlands...
Best wishes,

Re: unexpected location
It looks as though the sails turn anticlockwise when viewed from the front.

Precisely my point Over here they are rare anywhere so we are impressed just by seeing one and miss the finer points of the design of the thing.HansV wrote:Windmills in city neighbourhoods are not unusual in The Netherlands...

Because it's on an English roundabout as opposed to a Dutch roundabout?John Gray wrote:It looks as though the sails turn anticlockwise when viewed from the front.

The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The realist adjusts his sails.

Re: unexpected location
What clues tell the observer that the sails turn anti-clockwise (counter-clockwise in the US)?

Re: unexpected location
Thanks, Stuart! I don't think I've ever encountered the term 'widdershins.'
I didn't see how one determines widdershins movement in a set of windmill sails, though.

Re: unexpected location
Often the leading edge of the sails is made of heavier wood than the trailing edge. On the Holgate windmill that doesn't seem to be the case - I was inferring the direction of rotation from the angle of the sails. You will note that there is also a difference in the width of each half of the sails...BobH wrote:What clues tell the observer that the sails turn anti-clockwise (counter-clockwise in the US)?
