These are the style tennis shoes, sometimes called gym shoes, that my classmates and I wore 60+ years ago.

In Oz in the 60/70s those were called gym boots (distinct from shoes because they were above ankle).
Low cut ones were just called runners.

Me too - though at that age, I probably didn't know what basketball was. I distinctly remember the round rubber 'bubble' over each ankle bone for protection as well.

We had Gym shoes or pumps... and they were always black.

We wore sandshoes ("sannies") they were black and elasticated for young kids and with laces for older kids (we even tied the laces sometimes)... Also known as "gutties", presumably because they had rubber (guttapercha) soles.
