In Oz in the 60/70s those were called gym boots (distinct from shoes because they were above ankle).
Low cut ones were just called runners.

I would have called those Basketball boots BobH.

Me too - though at that age, I probably didn't know what basketball was. I distinctly remember the round rubber 'bubble' over each ankle bone for protection as well.

We wore sandshoes ("sannies") they were black and elasticated for young kids and with laces for older kids (we even tied the laces sometimes)... Also known as "gutties", presumably because they had rubber (guttapercha) soles.
