Great photo!
I like the ginger haired kid in his rumpled and soiled clothes. T-shirt, Wrangler jeans (we called them dungarees) and tennis shoes were the typical mode of dress for all in my neighborhood at that age. We never came home clean either.

Re: Beam me up
We had Gym shoes or pumps... and they were always black.
Always been a bit confused about why the US calls high heels "pumps".
And while I'm at it.... I used to have a fringe... why it's called bangs in the US totally defeats me!!

Well, you know, in the US they drive on a parkway, and park on a driveway.

Re: Beam me up
In RSA we have a really unique (slang) term for gym shoes, trainers, sneakers, tennis shoes...or whatever else. In many circles they are simply called, "tekkies". We even have a dedicated shopping outlet called "Tekkie Town" that sells these exclusively.

Re: Beam me up
These are the style tennis shoes, sometimes called gym shoes, that my classmates and I wore 60+ years ago.
Odor was a constant problem. Gym teachers (coaches) would do sniff tests on lockers and place notes for us to take them home for a good washing.
The fashion of the time was to buy the white ones. Only the nerds wore black ones.Odor was a constant problem. Gym teachers (coaches) would do sniff tests on lockers and place notes for us to take them home for a good washing.

Re: Beam me up
I can see a sort of logic in calling high heels 'pumps', since they raise/pump up your height but like you, fringe = bang, huh??LisaGreen wrote:...Always been a bit confused about why the US calls high heels "pumps".

I hope one of our cousins from across the pond can explain.

Re: Beam me up
Maybe bang refers to "instant"; now you see it, and bang-- now its gone!

Why do we put suits in garment bags and garments in a suitcase?

Why do we have hot water heaters? I much prefer to heat cold water.

Just added a few more inches to the total. Light, fluffy stuff, so not too bad. Looked out the back slider this AM and there was a BIG Alpha male coyote just checking things out. Told him to go away and he did.BobH wrote:Why do we have hot water heaters? I much prefer to heat cold water.

Today was really nice and sunny, even a little melt.

Thanks for the wiki-link Bob. There are certainly a LOT of bangs around.

Ah ha! This bit of that Wiki article seems to explain the origin of the term:BobH wrote:Bangs
Ta,...It is probably related to bang-tail, a term still used for the practice of cutting horses' tails straight across...
