LOFAR is an initiative to create a giant radio telescope consisting of many small elements; it's centered on The Netherlands, but there are/will be elements over much of Europe.
Although parts of LOFAR are already operational, and parts will continue to be added in the future, it was "opened" officially on Saturday, 12 June 2010 by Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands.
