Defaulting to International keyboard
When my keyboard input language is set to English, I have a choice between 2 keyboards: "United States-International" and "US." I have "United States-International" set as my Default input language in the Control Panel Text Services and Input Language box. However, I find that about 4-5 times a day, my keyboard automatically reverts back to "US." How can I stop this behavior? Is the any other solution besides removing "US" from my Installed Keyboard languages?
Regards,
JMT

Re: Defaulting to International keyboard
From Googling for this problem, removing the US layout appears to be the solution to this problem.

Re: Defaulting to International keyboard
When I tried that, the icon in my taskbar next to EN that lets me choose between United States-International and US disappared, and all I could do was type in US layout. So I re-added US, and now can choose again between US and United States-International.

That sounds like you deleted the wrong layout.

Re: Defaulting to International keyboard
I didn't because it showed "United States-International" as the one remaining language when I went back to add the "US" keyboard layout.

Hmm...
Try this:
Click Start, and type regedit in the search box, then press Enter.
You'll be asked to allow regedit; do so.
Navigate to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Keyboard Layout.
In the Preload key, make sure that the entry named 1 in the right-hand pane has value 00000409 (this is US English).
Delete entries named 2, 3 etc. if present.
In the Substitutes key, make sure that there is an entry named 00000409 and if not, create a string value with that name.
Set the value of this entry to 00020409 (this is the US International layout).
Delete any other entries in this key.
Close regedit.
Restart your computer.

Hans,
I stopped right before step 5 (Delete entries ...) because the entry named 1 has value d0010409.

No. Do you?
I have an Arabic-English keyboard and by that, I mean the Arabic letters are printed on top of the English letters.

Re: Defaulting to International keyboard
I don't have a Dvorak keyboard, but the code d0010409 is for a Dvorak keyboard, so I thought perhaps you had one.
Try changing the first entry to 00000409 and deleting the second one.
Then, as mentioned before:
In the Substitutes key, make sure that there is an entry named 00000409 and if not, create a string value with that name.
Set the value of this entry to 00020409 (this is the US International layout).
This should become effective next time you boot your computer.

Re: Defaulting to International keyboard
When I go to delete the second one (with value d0010409), I get a message saying that deleting it could cause system instability. Should I continue?

I thought d0010409 was the first one from the screenshot higher up in this thread...

Re: Defaulting to International keyboard
When I said second one, I meant second one from the top (the first one being "Default"). Should I change the value of 1 to "00000409" and then delete 2 and keep only Default and 1?

Re: Defaulting to International keyboard
Ah sorry, misunderstanding on my part.
Yes - leave Default alone, change the value of 1 to "00000409" and delete the item named 2.
And don't forget to make sure that Substitutes has an entry named 00000409 with value "00020409":
The change should become effective after rebooting.

Re: Defaulting to International keyboard
I went to delete all other values in the Substitute Key. I was able to delete “1†(I think that’s what it was called, but I don’t remember), but I couldn’t delete (Default). This is what Substitutes currently looks like.

Re: Defaulting to International keyboard
You should leave the Default entry alone in both Preload and Substitutes.
You should NOT have deleted the entry named "1" from Preload. As I have written several times now, you should have a value named "1" in Preload with value "00000409".
The Substitutes key looks OK in your screenshot.

Re: Defaulting to International keyboard
I didn't delete the entry named "1" from Preload.
Preload looks like the attached, and Substitutes looks like the above.
Nonetheless, I continue to experience the keyboard's switching from United States-International to US all on its own.

Re: Defaulting to International keyboard
What happens if you clear the value of (Default)? Do *not* delete the (Default) entry, but double-click it and delete its contents.
