Excel File Association

Post by jstevens »

I have Excel 2003 as well as 2007 installed on a Window7 OS.

My file association for Excel 2007 files is not working properly. It was working just fine and started to hiccup where one would click on an 2007 and Excel 2003 tries to open the file.

I have tried to reset the file association but it still does not work correctly. There is an icon for XL2007 attached to the file type not XL2003.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
John

That's the kind of thing you should expect when installing multiple versions.
What happens if you open Excel 2007 and then double-click an Excel workbook?
What happens if you try to open an Excel workbook from within Excel 2007?
Best wishes,
Hans

Hans,

1. What happens if you open Excel 2007 and then double-click an Excel workbook?
Having Excel 2007 open and using Windows Explorer to find an Excel file results in Excel 2003 opening and trying to open the file

2. What happens if you try to open an Excel workbook from within Excel 2007?
The Excel file opens just fine.

I have used Excel 2007 in an XP environment along with Excel 2003 without issues for a few years. I recently got a new laptop with W7 and need both versions of Excel.

You could try the following:

Right-click an .xlsx file in Windows Explorer.
Select Open With > Choose Default Program... from the popup menu.
Click Browse...
Locate the 2007 version of EXCEL.EXE - it'll be in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12 if you have 32-bit Windows 7, or in C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12 if you have 64-bit Windows 7.
Select it and click Open.
Make sure that the check box "Always use this program to open this kind of file" is ticked.
Click OK.

Repeat for .xlsm and .xlsb.

If it doesn't work, I'd resign myself to opening the files from within Excel 2007.
Best wishes,
Hans
