My daughter is writing a document in WORD2010 (English version, English Windows 7).
If I create a new document in Word and click "Insert Citation" followed by some random text in the dialog box, indeed a citation is added to the document (which can be recognized as it can be edited and moved around etc.). When she tries this in most of her most recent documents, everything works the same but the citation text is always only entered as text-only...
Anyone who has a clue how that is possible??? Is there an option maybe that disables this somehow??

Does she have other problems in Word? For example, if she copies some text, then selects Paste > Paste Special..., are all options available?

Found it... after some checking of things I noticed the document was open in compatibility mode (it was a docx). I had her resave the doc (and left the comp. mode tick-box unchecked). Now inserting citations works as intended...
