I used to work on an operating system called VMS (later renamed to OpenVMS) in the 1980's, and I'd get all the source code listings on microfiche whenever there was a new release. I really enjoyed reading those, and they were invaluable when I was trying to fix a problem.

All this talk about MS/DOS brings to mind UNIX. Doesn't it predate MS/DOS? In fact, wasn't the genesis of DOS in UNIX?

According to the Wikipedia article for Unix, Unix is from 1972 (although precursors were developed in the 1960s), so it certainly predates MS-DOS.
However, MS-DOS started as a clone of Digital Research's operating system CP/M. Both CP/M and MS-DOS were specifically designed for Intel processors, while Unix runs on almost any hardware.

I learned a bit about CP/M 2.2 for file handling on my disk-based Amstrad CPCs. When I was sent on a DOS course for work, I was amazed that they were so similar.

Absolutely.
Nowadays it's a battle when walking up Bay Street between opening my lips enough to mutter-along-with-Roberto to the Spanish language podcasts and the lip-balm (wax to you) which is supposed to stop my lips from looking like a dessicated clay-pan.

Since Bowlie seems to have dropped out of sight,(?) you have to pick up the slack and be the MAC resident expert. Though I don't recall many questions about those watchamacallits?
