Open Link In New Window

Post by jstevens »

I'm using IE 8 and would like to have a new window opened when I click on a link.

There must be a setting somewhere and I'm overlooking it.

Thanks for your suggestions,
John

John

You'll probably have to turn off tabbed browsing.
Or right-click a link and select "Open link in new window".
Best wishes,
Hans

Hans,

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't think to right-click.

If you have tabbed browsing enabled, check your settings at Internet Options | General | Tabs (section of General) | Settings (button). Note your choices in the last two sections.

Are you sure? Pressing my scroll wheel for instance results in the page scrolling by moving the cursor to the top or bottom of the screen - the further it moves the faster the page scrolls.

John as JoeP said,

Go to Tools/Internet options. On the General tab select the Settings button for Tabs
In the Tabbed Browsing Settings window select - Open links from other programs in: A new window
other options are:
A new tab in the current window
The current tab or window

It works with a bit of practice. My mouse is Logitech cordless optical. :time:

In some browsers, a "middle click" on a link will open it in a new tab. When you click other than on a link, you get the weird scrolling mode you described.

Apologies, you are correct. When you press the scroll wheel on a clickable link it opens it in a new browser window.

This is my experience too on the PCs & laptops at home (a mix of Win 98, XP & Vista) and my desktop XP box here at work. It is also the way the majority of the other PCS in the office work.

BUTthere are exceptions. We have some (4/5 year old) Dell PCs that have never behaved like that nor have I ever been able to persuade them to do so even by trying to change the functionality of the scroll wheel click via the supplied mouse driver suite.
