The USB SSD is a 1 TB Sandisk, encrypted with Veracrypt.
I have noticed that when it is plugged in for periods of over an hour, it may auto-dismount.
The drive is warm but not hot to the touch. Maybe the heat is enough to breach a threshold and send a bad-bit signal or similar down the USB cable to Veracrypt, and Veracrypt then auto-dismounts?
Or something else.
It has happened about five times so far, no apparent damage to the drive or files.
At first I thought that perhaps I had bumped the cable and so broken the connection to the USB port, but last night I left in hooked up making a copy of my 318 GB of data, and this morning - it had disconnected again without me being near it.
I can experiment with a sheet of aluminium acting as a heat sink, and see if the problem goes away.
