Free Duplicate Files Finder App

Post by BobH »

Does anyone have a free duplicate files finder app they can recommend? I found a recommendation from Rudi dating back some years. I found the app but it no longer functions for free. It will scan and id dupes but to delete the dupes you have to purchase it. I'm looking for those functions to include deleting dupes.

 :chocciebar: :thankyou:

Do you have CCleaner, a utility often mentioned here? It has a Duplicate Finder built in - you'll find it under Tools:

Wow, great find Hans (or at least, thanks for posting what you knew). In the past I've used a command line command to do it but this is waaay simpler.

Thanks, Hans.

If I ever knew about that feature of CCleaner I had forgotten it.

Using CCleaner to find duplicates isn't working for me. No doubt I need to learn more about it. I know with certainty that I have lots of duplicate photos, for example - and I specifically included the folders known to have duplicates, but CCleaner found none there.

Two things that got it working properly for me (after initially not finding anything). See screenshot below.

In red, make sure you only have "Name" ticked, otherwise if it finds two files with the same name but different size/date/content it will not match them.

In green, you may have to add a specific folder, and it might be good to create a couple of duplicate files in that folder, then test only in that folder to be sure it works.

I suspect it's the stuff in red that is the issue.

Bob. Everything 1.5 has extensive mechanisms for finding duplicates.
Duplicat*
Dupe: Function

Once you have identified your duplicates, you take the file list, optionally edit it and, I think, choose Delete All (or Select All then Delete)

Here is a pre-realse sample of my new tutorial "How do I?"
How do I Detect and Remove all But One Copy of a File
Let us suppose that you have a collection of 20,000 MP3 tracks of music, and you notice that while playing them at random, you seem to be hearing a lot of the Gilbert and Sullivan opera “Trial by Jury”. The MP3 tracks are held on your data drive in the folder tree T:\Music.
One way to find close-duplicates is with the following search string:-

Code: Select all

ext:mp3 t: trial by jury
