Blossoms belated

Post by ChrisGreaves »

After I arrived here I took a photo of a gizmo I found in the shed, and some of you responded telling me what it was. My original image was dated March 19th, 2019, but I cannot resolve my original posting.
Well ...
Today I realized that I can use it to harvest dandelion blossoms, or which I seem to have a bumper supply.

Deheaded view of a few swipes with the device.

At long last I can show off pictures of my blossoms.
The crocus are finished, the hyacinth, daffodil, tulips and bluebells are in full hue if not cry. :clapping:  :innocent:

Meanwhile the rest of you are probably harvesting your crops of zucchini, acres of wheat or corn ...
Cheers, Chris

Yikes Chris! That's some crazy angle you've go the camera at, it makes me feel dizzy!

It's so bizarre an angle the best I can do to fix it is this version:

Well, from memory, yes.
Big Yellow thing that starts off behind Fred's house and disappears behind Vince's two barbecues.
Maybe you guys don't have neighbours called "Fred" and "Vince"?

Thanks for fixing the image, Ken.
My camera doesn't do any scene justice before the first coffee is consumed.
After two coffees it is better.
Below is a photo of my front lawn, all decked out in my national colours.

FWIW I think that I know have the most colorful lawn in Bonavista; everyone else has mowed off their dandelions heads accidentally on purpose. I think those folks are lunatic.

Whereas, I consider neighbours that don't cut the heads off dandelions before they set seed to be lunatics

Ken, I know you mean this kindly, and anyway, I'm not your neighbour, so you can't possibly have been implying that I, of all your friends, am lunatic.

Mind you, I think all my neighbours are lunatic because after six or seven months of winter, when they are greeted with a free display of colour, they spend weekends burning gasoline, making noise, and quickly get rid of what colour nature has brought forth.
Too, I think Bonavisticians are false to the town's name by not planting flower bulbs; I mean, drop them in the ground and walk away; forever!

At least, I hope you mean this kindly,
I could be wrong!

Where the growing season is months long rather than days, dandelions are a nuisance to gardeners. Along the roadside they look good but they are are just too good at growing to let them into your garden because once there, if you ignore them, you end up with nothing but dandelions in your garden.

So it is seen as wrong for me to wait until the clocks form and then run the electric mower over them in a mild breeze?

:yep: that would definitely not impress neighbouring gardeners :wartgun:

My gardening diary reads "First dandelion Clock" on June 6th this year. so dandelion seeds, like viruses, were already a-spreading before last weekend's mowings.
I think that dandelions will always be with us; like viruses.

There is a downside to my dandelions. As the photos above show, the dandelions tend to distract from the glorious multi-hued tulip blossoms scattered amongst the daffodils.

20240610_064606.jpg
But as these two images show, in the early morning, before the dandelion blossoms re-open, even before the tulip blossoms re-open, the driveway beds make a significant display.
(Of course, they look better as you drive a car along the street past the end of the driveway).

I might see if I can convince the electric mower to trim the front lawn once we return from our banking trip to Catalina this afternoon.
Cheers, Chris

Ken, this afternoon, after I got back from banking in Catalina I hauled out the electric lawnmower and did a bit of re-distribution of dandelion seeds. You should be proud of me!

I could be wrong, but it looks as if this year's strawberry crop will exceed last year's.

Just goes to show what a mere two consecutive sunny days can do to the spirit of a strawberry runner.

If I can find my garden trowel after yesterday's strenuous weeding of 1/8 of the eastern tulip bed, I might weed around this plant.
Cheers, Chris :yum:

Probably not. There must have been warmer/sunnier months of June in the past, and will be in the future.

Locals are complaining about "how much rain we've had", but I feel that generally the spring has been a succession of chilly drizzly days - not the sort of day when I want to get outside and empty compost bins, or check on my 00s of fruit trees, or weed a tulip bed etc. With my ginger biscuit recipe I find it easy to stay inside and curl up on the couch with a book.

I have kept a Gardening Calendar since 2021 and we seem to be generally on track for milestones. 1st delivery of grass clippings, one warm day mid-March, first daffodils appear etc,.
I am still getting used to the idea that outdoor gardening can't really start until the second week in June, But for March, April, and May other people are posting photos of fields of daffodils, chicks hatching, and the first crop of <your favorite vegetable here>.

Cheers, Chris

30°C in Bonavista? What is the world coming to? We haven't even been close to that this year...

It is, I suspect, a local phenomenon.
Once a year Bonavista hosts a really weird weather day to confuse my good friend BobH with metrification.
Again.

Cheers, Chris
(later) this page reports that Bonavista reached 27.8.
