Email Notifications

Post by Graeme »

Hello

I'm trying to set up email notifications in a software I use for astrophotography. But it doesn't seem to work! Could anyone advise please, in the setup can the From address be the same as the Default recipient?

What error message are you getting, or does 'Send Test Message' simply not result in anything?
(As far as Gmail is concerned, you can certainly send and receive with the same address.)

Have you tried port 465?

Hi Graeme
I don’t know if this has any relevance to what you are doing, but I have a few CDO message sending programs that use ( free ## ) gmail accounts, and I recognize some of those things in your screenshot as things that go in my coding.
These CDO codings of mine all worked reliably until a few years ago. But then gmail changed a few things:
They remove the option for allowing Less secure apps & your Google Account, which allowed you to use the google account password to connect to the smtp server. ( ## It is possoible that the option for allowing Less secure apps & your Google Account is still available for a non free gmail account, I am not sure )

What you have to do now is to
_1) You must enable (Turn on) 2 step verification on the gmail account
_2) You must generate an "Apps passwword". ( You can make a few if you like***)
_3) That "Apps passwword" is now an extra second password, for that gmail account which, amongst other things, is what you use in any coding or apps and stuff that use your gmail account. (***or you can have a few of these extra passwords if you like for different things)

(By the way, the only smtp serverport thing that ever worked with me and gmail was 25 or 465, I think 465 most recently, the same number Leif suggested)

(Edit: P.S. In all my codings it was always OK if the from and send to address were the same.)
I seriously don’t ever try to annoy. Maybe I am just the kid that missed being told about the King’s new magic suit, :(

Thanks Leif.

Aye! None, a click of the Send Test Message does nothing.

Port 578 was the pre populated default but it was quoted in the same place I found the SMTP host info so I left it alone. I'll try 465.

Thanks for the info Alan.

I didn't know a non free gmail account was a thing!

I'll read the other post you quoted.

Thanks @leif and thanks @docaelstein but I gave up in the end! The email option solution setup appears to be beyond my understanding! I tried Telegram but that was equally esoteric and unfathomable! IFTTT looks powerful but there's a monthly fee. So I went for Pushover in the end. For a one off fee it was easy to install and does exactly what I need.

Regards

Graeme
