Maderia has some great views. Well captured Ken.

Those saplings will have a hard time trying to take root in solid rock!

Well spotted, yes! I haven't been very methodical in going through my photos so the order I've been finding and uploading these panoramas is a bit random. When I found more from Pico do Areeiro I edited the original post so that the six images in the two posts from there are now in chronological order.

There will be another couple from another "EEK, that's a bit of a drop", viewpoint when I next visit The Lounge from my desktop PC. At the moment I'm on my supercharged Win 8.1 laptop, sitting in the sun in the shelter of my open garage door as I play with trains.

They are probably native laurel, in which case they will thrive as before man got there the entire island was laurel forest. These views from Pico do Aeeiro are of primary forest and a UNESCO site:

This viewpoint translates as 'The balcony'. It's at the end of a short walk from Ribeiro Frio.

Yes, and with more planning and a better head for heights, it has amazing walks along the 'levadas'. These are water channels that follow essentially contour lines so are almost flat but the paths beside the channels are often not that wide and rarely fenced. Search for more info, or start here:
